The Pokédex explains that it rapidly bores through the ground at 50 miles per hour by squirming and twisting its massive, rugged body in search of food, which is the rocks it eats the whole time. As it digs through the ground, it absorbs many hard objects, which is what makes its body so solid. It has a magnet in its brain that acts as a compass so that it does not lose direction while it is tunneling. As it grows older, its body becomes steadily rounder and smoother and harden to become similar to a diamond, but colored black. The thunderous roar of its tunneling echoes a long way, and the tunnels it leaves are used as homes by Diglett.

Onix made its debut in ''[[Pokémon Red & Blue]]''. Brock, the Pewter City gym leader, owned a level 14 Onix. Bruno, the second trainer of the Elite Four, also has two Onixes on his team. Onix can be found in the wild in caves like Mt. Moon and Victory Road. In ''[[Pokémon Diamond & Pearl]]'', Roark also owns a level 12 Onix. In the anime, Brock, one of Ash's friends, owned an Onix.
