Nia is introduced to the protagonist [[Rex]] as a low-ranking member of a group of people searching for a legendary treasure. While she initially balks at having to work with such a young salvager, she finds him easier to hang around with than the stoic {{iw|xsw|Jin}} and the smarmy {{iw|xsw|Malos}}. As a {{iw|xsw|Driver}}, Nia is bonded to a loyal {{iw|xsw|Blade|XC2}} named {{iw|xsw|Dromarch}}, who follows her commands and provides powerful water-based attacks and weaponry. The group successfully finds an {{iw|xsw|Ancient Ship}} and hauls up the "treasure" inside: a legendary Blade called the {{iw|xsw|Aegis}}. Rex foolishly touches the red sword, which prompts Jin to immediately kill him, greatly upsetting Nia. When Jin and Malos then order her to kill the rest of the salvagers to cover their tracks, she rebels, and instead joins Rex's side, who has been revived by the Aegis named [[Pyra]]. After escaping the scene, Nia joins Rex and Pyra's journey to find {{iw|xsw|Elysium}}, the legendary paradise at the top of the {{iw|xsw|World Tree}} where humanity can take shelter from the sinking continents of the [[Cloud Sea of Alrest]].
Nia was originally the Blade to the Lord of Echell from Gormott Province. Nia grew up in a wealthy household, which included her {{s|xenoserieswiki|Driver}} and his daughter, who Nia came to recognize as her sister. Nia's "sister" was always sick, and the rest of the family cared for her. Nia would study to become a proper lady to help the family. Their lives would fall apart after her Driver spent his entire fortune in search of a cure for his daughter's sickness and lost his status as lord. The family would then become drifters, with Nia's sister eventually succumbing to her illnesses. In a desperate attempt to preserve some part of his daughter, her Driver forced Nia to consume the body of her sister, turning Nia into a special type of Blade called a {{s|xenoserieswiki|Flesh Eater}}. Her Driver would also die shortly after, leaving her alone with no family. However, Nia found the {{s|xenoserieswiki|core crystal}} that belonged to her Driver and resonated with it, becoming the Driver to {{s|xenoserieswiki|Dromarch}}. Together they went on the run from the {{s|xenoserieswiki|Indoline Praetorium}}, who hunt down Flesh Eaters like Nia. They were rescued by {{s|xenoserieswiki|Jin}}, who offered her to join his organization, {{s|xenoserieswiki|Torna|organization}}.  


Nia is a brash and unfiltered personality. Quick to anger and easily offended, she lashes out at the slightest provocation, with violence when she can get away with it and crass insults otherwise. This is mostly due to her feeling threatened and alone, an outcast from anywhere who knows her origins, with no one but Dromarch to steady her. Should she ever find someone who truly accepts her, she does possess a more caring side and a willingness to fight for someone rather than just against others.
During a salvaging mission with Jin, {{s|xenoserieswiki|Malos}}, and [[Rex]], they all uncover the {{s|xenoserieswiki|Ancient Ship}} that {{s|xenoserieswiki|Addam}} sank under the Cloud Sea 500 years prior to keep the {{s|xenoserieswiki|Aegis}} from wreaking havoc. She witnesses Jin kill Rex after touching the Aegis sword, prompting her and Dromarch to defect to the recently revived Rex's side. They are the first people to join him on his and [[Pyra]]'s journey to reach {{s|xenoserieswiki|Elysium}}. Eventually, it is revealed that Nia is a Blade who was merged with the corpse of her former Driver's daughter. After the reveal, she can be freely switched between Blade and Driver forms. She even temporarily becomes the primary Blade of Rex during the battle at the Cliffs of {{s|xenoserieswiki|Morytha}}, due to Pyra and [[Mythra]] being unusable at the time.
 
As a Driver, Nia's gameplay is based on whichever Blades she has bonded with. Dromarch cannot be unequipped, so she will always be at least partly in a healing role, even if her other Blades are attackers or tanks. She is one of the better healers due to her high ether stat, but her fighting techniques and animations tend to be subpar compared to other Drivers, and Dromarch is not a particularly powerful Blade. Nia does later unlock a unique mechanic that significantly increases both her offensive and defensive potential, at the expense of being able to use her Blades in {{iw|xsw|Field Skill|XC2}} checks.


Some time after the events of ''Xenoblade Chronicles 2'', Nia is seen in a photograph holding a baby with the same hair color as herself, implying it is her child. By the events of ''Xenoblade Chronicles 3'', Nia has ascended to Queen of {{s|xenoserieswiki|Agnus}} and has gone to war against {{s|xenoserieswiki|Keves}} and their queen {{s|xenoserieswiki|Melia}}. However, both Nia and Melia were revealed to be robotic imposters, with the real Nia in hibernation at the Cloudkeep and the real Melia captured within {{s|xenoserieswiki|Origin}} and being used by {{s|xenoserieswiki|Moebius}} to gain access. After being rescued, Nia supports the main cast and sometimes joins in key battles. She also occasionally joins the party in the overworld, with specific quests involving her reflecting on her past and her lack of purpose in the modern age, though she is convinced by the party to continue forward in whatever future will be caused by the conjoined worlds splitting once again.
