Mushroom Kingdom (キノコ王国, Mushroom Kingdom) is the first stage of the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Its design is reminiscent of classic Mario platforming levels, complete with Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Koopa Paratroopas. Like almost all stages of its type, Mushroom Kingdom is accessible in multi-player modes through the debug menu. The game will crash when a character enters the Yoshi team's area, although there is a code that prevents the encounter.

The stage is known internally by the debug menu as 1-1KINOKO, where "1-1" refers to its position in Adventure Mode, and "Kinoko" translates to "Mushroom" from Japanese.
Mushroom Kingdom (sometimes also called Mushroom Kingdom III or Mushroom Kingdom Adventure) is the first stage of Super Smash Bros. Melee 's Adventure Mode. Its design is reminiscent of classic Mario platforming levels, complete with Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Koopa Paratroopas.

Near the beginning, the player must hop across a series of platforms in water. As swimming does not exist in Melee, falling into a water nearly guarantees the player getting KO'd. After this, the player enters an elevated platform where a team of 10 Yoshis must be defeated to continue. After this, the player must cross a series of pipes and then reach the ending flag. As a reference to Super Mario Bros., the player must cross a flag in order to complete the level.
The stage begins with a straightforward platforming section, in which the player must jump over stone platforms to progress. Various formations of breakable brick blocks float overhead. A Warp Pipe, its entrance blocked by wooden boards, serves as the stage's first checkpoint. Immediately after the pipe, the player must hop on a series of platforms to cross a pool of water. As swimming does not exist in Melee, falling into the water without any recovery moves will result in a KO. Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Koopa Paratroopas appear throughout these sections and serve as obstacles.

This section is followed by a fight against a team of 10 Yoshis in a locked battle on an elevated platform. Toad appears in the background, running from one edge of the platform to the other. After the player defeats the Yoshis, this platform becomes a second checkpoint.

The stage's final section consists of a long, horizontal pipe. Brick blocks and various enemies appear here as well. A flagpole and another Toad wait at the stage's end. To complete the stage, the player must pass the flagpole. If the player passes the flagpole while the match timer's seconds portion ends in 2, Luigi will replace Mario in the following battle and if he hasn't already been unlocked, challenge the player upon the Adventure Mode's completion.

The Mushroom Kingdom is the main setting of Mario games. This stage is an adaptation of several elements from 2D platforming Mario games such as Super Mario Bros.: in such games, the goal is traversing levels, usually from left to right, while going through obstacles, defeat enemies, and break blocks.
In Super Mario Bros., Mario must move from the start of level on the left to the end of the level on right while going through obstacles, defeat enemies, and break blocks. The majority of the Mario games, including Super Mario Bros., take place in the Mushroom Kingdom. In Melee, the first level of Adventure Mode is simply called Mushroom Kingdom. The goal of the level is the same as it is in Super Mario Bros. A common obstacle in Super Mario Bros. were green pipes. Some were just obstacles, but some could be used to transport Mario to a different area. In Melee, there are some green pipes, but they are closed off; therefore, they cannot transport players through the stage. In Super Mario Bros. 3, there are some levels that feature horizontal pipes that act as platforms. Towards the end of the level in Melee, there is a long pipe that acts as a platform. In some levels in Super Mario Bros., there are giant mushrooms that act as platforms. The giant mushrooms seen in the background of this level in Melee could be a reference to the giant mushrooms in Super Mario Bros. Also in the background of this level is a 1-hole golf course, which may be a reference to the Mario golf games. Another thing that is in the background of this level in Melee is Princess Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64. When Mario reaches the end of the level in Super Mario Bros., he must jump and pull down a flag from a flag pole in order to clear the level. In Melee, there is a flag pole at the end of the level, but the player does not pull it down in order to clear the level.

Several elements from Mario levels are directly replicated in this stage: Brick Blocks, purely decorative Pipes (including a horizontal one, possibly inspired by Super Mario Bros. 3), common enemies such as Goombas, Koopas and Koopa Paratroopas, and the mariowiki at the end of levels, which Mario has to reach to clear the level itself.
A common enemy in Super Mario Bros. are Goombas. In order to defeat a Goomba, Mario must simply jump on it, but if a Goomba runs into Mario, he takes damage. In Melee, Goombas appear as an enemy and do the same things as they did in Super Mario Bros. Another common enemy in Super Mario Bros. are Koopas. When Mario jumps on a Koopa, it retreats into its shell. Mario can then either bump or jump on the shell to cause it to slide along the ground and do damage to other enemies; however, if Mario waits too long the Koopa will come back out of its shell. There were also Koopa Paratroopa which were Koopas with wings. Paratroopas used their wings to either jump or float. If the Paratroopa is floating, green ones will move side to side, while red ones move up and down. If Mario jumps on a Paratroopa, it looses its wings and turns into a normal Koopa. In Melee, Koopas and Koopa Paratroopas appear as enemies and act the same as they did in Super Mario Bros.

The red Koopa Paratroopa's shell's ability to deal flame damage is similar to one of its effects in Super Mario World, where it allowed Yoshi to shoot fireballs when eaten.
Playability through hacking
Like almost all stages of its type, Mushroom Kingdom is accessible in multi-player modes through hacking. The game will crash when the Yoshi team's area is entered.

The giant mushrooms in the background could be a reference to similar-looking platforms in the original Super Mario Bros. The background also features a 1-hole golf course, a possible reference to the Mario Golf games, and Princess Peach's Castle from mariowiki.
