Metal Mario more or less reprises his role as a special opponent from the single player game from the first Super Smash Bros.. He is fought after the player defeated the fifteen Fighting Wire Frames. Metal Mario is not a unique opponent; he is actually a Mario that is permanently under the effect of the Metal Box item. He is agressive, and his recovery is longer, but he falls much faster. If the player has unlocked Luigi, Metal Mario teams up with Metal Luigi for that same battle, making it more difficult. Metal Mario is apparently a servant of Master Hand along with Metal Luigi, as they serve as guards or generals to Master Hand. The fact that they are sent to the Battlefield like missiles out of a void somewhat strengthens this theory as they don't appear unless Master Hand's minions are defeated and how they are lifeless metal supports this estimate. Mario can enter this form normally with a Metal Box but is temporary and in control of the player. Metal Mario also appears in Brawl's Classic by chance but is alone and acts like a regular CPU.

Metal Mario also appears as a trophy which can be acquired randomly through the 1-P mode or the Trophy Lottery

"Mario was in for a surprise the first time he hit a Metal Box in Super Mario 64. The metal cap that popped out transformed Mario into living metal, giving him great stamina, a heavy tread, and the ability to walk underwater. In Super Smash Bros., Metal Mario showed up as an incredibly stubborn midlevel boss." (Super Mario 64, 9/96)

Metal Luigi appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee with Metal Mario after defeating the fifteen Fighting Wire Frames in Adventure Mode. He only appears if the player has already unlocked Luigi. Stat-wise, he is, like Metal Mario, constantly under the effect of the Metal Box.Metal Luigi is somewhat of a coward during battle, as he never leaves Metal Mario's side in battle. If Metal Mario is KOd, Metal Luigi avoids contact with player unless he/she is close. Luigi can enter this state by normal means if he breaks a Metal Box, only this version is temporary. Metal Luigi can also appear in Brawl during Classic Mode by chance yet functions like a normal CPU during battle.
