Meta Crystal has two platforms, one on top of another. The top platform is a small [[soft platform]]. The bottom platform is the main platform that slants upwards to the right, and downwards to the left.
The main platform of the stage is a large clump of metal crystals. Its upper surface is irregular and is slightly raised on the right and, to a lesser extent, on the left. A [[soft platform]] encased in metal wires hovers above the main one.


The stage is quite small, probably to counter how difficult it is to hit Metal Mario offstage. [[Item]]s have a very low spawn rate.

Meta crystal is most likely based on ''[[Super Mario 64]]'''s {{s|mariowiki|Cavern of the Metal Cap}}, considering that both involve Metal Mario and contain various crystals. The platform and wire walls match those of {{s|mariowiki|Hazy Maze Cave}}, which is the only way to access Metal Cavern.
This stage is loosely based {{s|mariowiki|Cavern of the Metal Cap}}, a secret area in ''{{s|supermariowiki|Super Mario 64}}''. It can be accessed within the {{s|mariowiki|Hazy Maze Cave}} level by jumping into a pool of liquid metal hidden behind a set of double doors in the Underground Lake area of the cave. Upon entering the cavern, [[Mario]] will transform into his [[metal]] power-up form for a short time. Hitting the [[supermariowiki:Cap Switch|Metal Cap Switch]] will activate the green [[Metal Box]]es in the game, which will allow Mario to transform into Metal Mario by breaking them.


This stage features elements from both levels. The stage's setting takes place in an underground area decorated with glimmering crystals similar to the Cavern of the Metal Cap. The platforms and the wire walls are similar to those found in the Hazy Maze Cave. The large glimmering crystals resemble a design previously featured in the underground levels of ''Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island''.

Additionally, the skybox of the stage, an overgrowth of dark blue crystals, loosely resembles the background of the ice cave levels in the ''Super Mario All-Stars'' version of ''Super Mario Bros. 3''.
