{{pkmn|Meowth}} is a Normal-type [[List of Pokémon|Pokémon]] introduced in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation I}}, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #052 as the "Scratch Cat Pokémon". It evolves into {{iw|bulbapedia|Persian}} starting at level 28. It and its evolution received Alolan Forms in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation VII}}. It also received a Galarian Form in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation VIII}}, in which it evolves into {{iw|bulbapedia|Perrserker}} instead. In ''{{iw|bulbapedia|Pokémon Sword and Shield}}'', a special pre-order Meowth can transform into its {{iw|bulbapedia|Gigantamax}} form, during which it can use the move {{iw|bulbapedia|G-Max Gold Rush|move}}. It is easily recognized by the coin on its forehead and is known to collect similar shiny objects. It is especially notable among the general public for being a part of the [[Team Rocket]] trio in the ''Pokémon'' anime series along with Jessie and James, appearing in almost all of its episodes for the first 25 seasons. In the National Pokédex, it is registered as #052.

It has 40 base power, 100% accuracy and the unique property of producing money which can be picked up after each battle. It was originally Meowth's {{iw|bulbapedia|signature move}}, meaning it was that only Pokémon able to learn it by level, along with Persian, prior to {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation IV}}.

Based on its prominent role in the Pokémon anime series, which was extremely popular at the time of the original Smash's release, [[List of Rumors#Cut characters|a popular rumor]] claims Meowth was planned to be playable in the game along with [[Bowser]], [[King Dedede]], [[Mewtwo]], and many other characters, before being cut for space/time constraints. However, unlike the aforementioned three characters, no definitive official source has ever been found that proves Meowth was ever planned to be included as a playable character.

Meowth can be summoned by a [[Poké Ball]]. It uses Pay Day as its attack: Meowth hovers in the place it was summoned, scattering coins in all directions. Opponents hit by the coins will take 6% damage. When the coins hit characters, they also make {{b|Mario|universe}}-coin sounds. The attack radius of Pay Day is short so it can be easy to avoid, however, fighters can become trapped in the barrage of coins taking up to 50% damage. Meowth can also deal 12% damage with its body, which has much higher [[knockback]] scaling, so it may [[KO]] foes after they are hit with the coins.

Meowth does not return in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', only making a cameo as a [[trophy]]. Meowth's trophy is unlocked after getting the "Smash Blue" trophies (from [[All-Star Mode]]) for all 26 playable characters. This is the only game where Meowth isn't a Poké Ball Pokémon.

Meowth's trophy is atypical with respect to other ''Pokémon'' trophies. Instead of describing its behaviour in the ''Pokémon'' series, the trophy instead references ''{{iw|bulbapedia|Meowth's Party}}'', the seventh ending animation for the Japanese release of the ''Pokémon'' anime. Meowth is seen holding his guitar from the animation, and the description references the Japanese lyrics to its accompanying song. This animation was also used as the basis for a technical demo used to demonstrate the GameCube's technology at Nintendo's SpaceWorld 2001 event; the model used for the trophy appears to be the very same model from this tech demo.

Meowth returns to its role as a Poké Ball Pokémon in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', using the same attack it used in ''Super Smash Bros.'', but in a slightly different fashion. This time, Meowth throws a barrage of coins left or right in the opponent's direction instead of quickly scattering coins in all directions, though it will turn to face the opponent that is closest to it. The coins only deal 3% damage, but falling from above onto Meowth will cause the victim to be locked into the rush of coins and thus take heavy damage.
