The [[starter character]]s are the same as in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'': {{SSBU|Mario}}, {{SSBU|Donkey Kong}}, {{SSBU|Link}}, {{SSBU|Samus}}, {{SSBU|Yoshi}}, {{SSBU|Kirby}}, {{SSBU|Fox}}, and {{SSBU|Pikachu}}. Most other characters can be unlocked by playing [[Versus Mode]] matches, clearing {{SSBU|Classic Mode}} with a specific character, or awakening them in [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]].

Each of the three types of {{SSBU|Mii Fighter}} can be unlocked by simply creating one in the Games & More menu, or by awakening the Mii Fighter of that type in [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], which is based on the type's default Mii.

Players who purchased the game in the eShop or registered a physical copy with My Nintendo before January 31, 2019 received a free download code for {{SSBU|Piranha Plant}}. After this date, it became available for purchase. The pricing is $5 USD.
