== [[Unlockable character|Characters]] ==

The [[starter character]]s are the same as in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'': {{SSBU|Mario}}, {{SSBU|Donkey Kong}}, {{SSBU|Link}}, {{SSBU|Samus}}, {{SSBU|Yoshi}}, {{SSBU|Kirby}}, {{SSBU|Fox}}, and {{SSBU|Pikachu}}. Most other characters can be unlocked by playing [[Versus Mode]] matches, clearing {{SSBU|Classic Mode}} with a specific character, or awakening them in [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]].

=== Mii Fighters ===

Each of the three types of {{SSBU|Mii Fighter}} can be unlocked by simply creating one in the Games & More menu, or by awakening the Mii Fighter of that type in [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], which is based on the type's default Mii.

=== [[Downloadable content (SSBU)|DLC]] ===

Players who purchased the game in the eShop or registered a physical copy with My Nintendo before January 31st, 2019 received a free download code for {{SSBU|Piranha Plant}}. After this date, it became available for purchase. The pricing is $5 USD.

{{SSBU|Joker}}, {{SSBU|Hero}}, {{SSBU|Banjo & Kazooie}}, {{SSBU|Terry}} and a currently unidentified character are available for preorder as a bundle through the [[Downloadable content (SSBU)|Fighters Pass]], and will also be available for purchase individually. On the September 4th, 2019 Direct, Nintendo revealed that more DLC fighters were set to be in production after the Fighter's Pass.

All stages in the base game are available from the start, making it the only ''Smash Bros.'' game to do so. However, each of the five downloadable characters are bundled with a stage, and these five stages will also be part of the Fighters Pass:
