Editing List of SSBU tier lists

The [[LumiRank]] ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'' [[tier list]] was published more than one year after the end of the final balance patch, [[List of updates (SSBU)/13.0.1 changelog|patch 13.0.1]]. All versions of the list are as follows.

==First tier list (February 24th, 2023)==

This is the first tier list released by [[LumiRank]].<ref>[https://twitter.com/UltRankSSB/status/1629218378182279168]</ref><ref>[https://blog.start.gg/ultranks-first-official-ssbu-tier-list-4a35bf3dcfc3]</ref> Players were eligible to be a panelist if they were ranked in the Top 101 of six global rankings for the majority of 2022: [[UltRank 2022]], [[OrionRank 2022]], [https://ssbdatarankings.wordpress.com/2023/01/05/echorank-ultimate-2022-final-ranking-and-analysis/ EchoRank 2022], [https://omegarank.com/ ΩRank 2022], [https://omegarank.com/category/2022-full-year/ 1000Rank 2022], and [https://raccoonstats.wordpress.com/category/rankings/raccrank-22-v-3/ RaccRank 2022]. Out of 155 eligible players, 71 players participated as panelists, with panelists from every major ''Ultimate'' region around the world. Panelists were asked to rate characters from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. Panelists were also asked to give an ordered list of their Top 5 characters, and after panelist responses were normalized, their Top 5 would be scored from as 10.X (from 10.5 to 10.1). Each character's highest and lowest 3 responses were then removed. To avoid higher or lower participation from different regions from biasing the list, responses were weighted by region according to each region's representation on OrionRank 2022. Finally, tiers were split up by {{s|wikipedia|K-means clustering}}. The numerical ordering has been inverted from the tier lists of previous games, as the best characters now have the highest numbers instead of the lowest numbers.

{{SSBU|Pokémon Trainer}} was voted as the entire team instead of individually, as were {{SSBU|Pyra}} and {{SSBU|Mythra}}. Miis were ranked, unlike the [[List of SSB4 tier lists#Fourth tier list (December 11, 2017)|last ''SSB4'' tier list]]. Additionally, the following [[Echo Fighter]] pairs were voted together due to their lack of significant differences: {{SSBU|Peach}} and {{SSBU|Daisy}}, {{SSBU|Simon}} and {{SSBU|Richter}}, {{SSBU|Samus}} and {{SSBU|Dark Samus}}, and {{SSBU|Pit}} and {{SSBU|Dark Pit}}. Although {{SSBU|Min Min}} and {{SSBU|Palutena}} appeared to have the same score, they differed past the 3 decimal places shown.

{{SSBU|Steve}} was ranked as the #1 character by 41 out of 71 panelists, with multiple other panelists ranking {{SSBU|Sonic}}, {{SSBU|Joker}}, Pyra and Mythra, or {{SSBU|Fox}} as #1. Pyra and Mythra were ranked as the #2 character the most, and was the most agreed upon among panelists, having the lowest standard deviation. {{SSBU|Ganondorf}} was given the lowest score by 54 out of 68 panelists, and {{SSBU|Little Mac}} and Ganondorf had the largest gap between two consecutive characters on the tier list. Pyra and Mythra, Steve, Joker, {{SSBU|Ryu}}, and {{SSBU|Captain Falcon}} had the lowest standard deviations, while {{SSBU|Pikachu}}, {{SSBU|Mii Swordfighter}}, {{SSBU|Piranha Plant}}, {{SSBU|Luigi}}, and {{SSBU|Lucario}} had the greatest standard deviations.

As listed in the header, this tier list was created in February 2023, over four years after the game launched. The reason for this delay are due to several factors. The first and main reason is that the [[COVID-19 pandemic]] shut down offline tournaments for a long time and forced players to play online, which significantly altered and skewed data, forcing tier list makers to consider the new outcomes that come with online play. The second reason is that an "official" tier list maker could not be decided on. Due to [[SmashBoards]] generally falling out of favor as the premier location for ''Smash'' discourse after the release of ''Ultimate'', many alternatives were proposed. Several organizations suggested they be the organizer of the first tier list, while others suggested getting rid of the traditional panel ranking in favor of raw community statistics. Some even questioned if a tier list for ''Ultimate'' was feasible or even necessary given its large roster and it generally being regarded as well-balanced. 

Data aggregation organization [[PG Stats]] was the first to announce they would be making a tier list, as they did with the official ''Melee'' tier list starting in 2021, and promised to present what they created at some point in late 2022 to early 2023. However, several controversies and a company-wide exodus from parent company {{Team|Panda}} caused these plans to be canceled. LumiRank then stepped in a few months later and is now considered the official tier list maker for ''Ultimate'' going forward.

==Second tier list (February 15th, 2024)==

This is the second tier list released by [[LumiRank]].<ref>{{cite web|url=https://luminosity.gg/news/smash-ultimates-2nd-official-tier-list|title=Smash Ultimate's 2nd Official Tier List}}</ref> The methodology remained largely the same from the first. Any player ranked on the [[LumiRank Mid-Year 2023]] or [[LumiRank 2023]] was eligible to vote, and 63 players ultimately submitted a ballot, although two were tossed out due to scoring less than five characters, while one other was tossed for being a troll ballot. Not every character was scored by every panelist: only {{SSBU|Bayonetta}}, {{SSBU|Fox}}, {{SSBU|Palutena}}, {{SSBU|Peach}}/{{SSBU|Daisy}}, {{SSBU|Pyra}}/{{SSBU|Mythra}}, {{SSBU|R.O.B.}}, {{SSBU|Shulk}}, {{SSBU|Steve}}, and {{SSBU|Wolf}} were scored by every panelist, while {{SSBU|Mii Swordfighter}} was scored by the fewest (55). A new tier was introduced (E tier). Despite that, the tiers themselves were not explicitly defined.

The largest rise on the tier list was Bayonetta, who rose 19 spots due to the character's consistent popularity in the metagame and the success of players such as {{Sm|Bloom4Eva}}, {{Sm|Lima}}, and {{Sm|TamaPDaifuku}}. In addition, Corrin rose 15 spots due to a renaissance period in 2023 spearheaded by {{Sm|Neo|p=Japan}} and {{Sm|SHADIC}}; {{SSBU|Sora}} rose 13 spots as he finally gained more recognition in top level play; and {{SSBU|Snake}} and both {{SSBU|Samus}} and {{SSBU|Dark Samus}} rose double digits due to being some of the most popular characters in the current metagame. Two characters that defined the current metagame and were mains of one of the [[Four Horsemen]] &mdash; Sonic and {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}} &mdash; rose into the top 3, and 9 panelists notably listed Sonic as first instead of Steve. In the lower tiers, {{SSBU|Lucario}}, {{SSBU|Incineroar}}, and [[Pit (SSBU)|the]] [[Dark Pit (SSBU)|Pits]] all rose double digits due to improving results, thanks to the efforts of both {{Sm|Armadillo}} and {{Sm|Gachipi}} for Lucario, {{Sm|Skyjay}} for Incineroar, and {{Sm|Zackray}} for the Pits.

On the other hand, the biggest drops were from characters that either lost their best players to other characters (such as {{SSBU|Byleth}} and {{SSBU|Mega Man}}) or had noticeably worse performances in the current metagame (such as {{SSBU|Bowser}} and {{SSBU|Young Link}}). In the higher tiers, the most notable drops were {{SSBU|Roy}}, who fell 11 spots due to the decline, retirement, or hiatus of his best players that year; {{SSBU|Wolf}}, who fell 10 spots due to the character's weaknesses being more exploitable (such as his recovery) and growing opinions that the character was overrated despite his popularity; and {{SSBU|Joker}}, who fell out of the top 3 due to {{Sm|MkLeo}}'s decline and {{Sm|Zackray}}'s greater focus on the Pits, with newer Joker players not being as strong as the two. This is the second time {{SSBU|Ganondorf}} has been ranked in his own tier at the bottom, the first time being the fifth tier list in Brawl.

The change in a character's score generally correlated with the direction they moved. The exceptions to this were {{SSBU|Jigglypuff}}, who fell a spot despite its score going up, as well as {{SSBU|Pichu}}, {{SSBU|Palutena}}, {{SSBU|Mii Brawler}}, {{SSBU|King Dedede}}, {{SSBU|Bowser Jr.}}, {{SSBU|Ryu}}, {{SSBU|Donkey Kong}}, and the {{SSBU|Ice Climbers}}, who rose on the tier list despite their scores going down.

==Third tier list (February 17th, 2025)==

This is the third tier list released by [[LumiRank]].<ref>{{cite web|url=https://luminosity.gg/news/smash-ultimates-3rd-official-tier-list|title=Smash Ultimate's 3rd Official Tier List}}</ref> The methodology remained largely the same from the previous ones, with the only notable difference being the removals of the D- and E- tiers. As such, the individual tiers themselves remain undefined. 100 players who were ranked on the [[LumiRank 2024.1]] or the [[LumiRank 2024.2]] submitted ballots, with 7 being tossed out due to rating fewer than 10 characters. {{SSBU|Steve}} was the only character scored by every panelist while {{SSBU|Ike}} and {{SSBU|Lucas}} were scored by the fewest.

Steve remained the undisputed #1 character, however he received slightly fewer #1 votes than the previous year. {{SSBU|Sonic}} and {{SSBU|Kazuya}} also received votes for #1, with Kazuya receiving slightly more than Sonic. Sonic, {{SSBU|Snake}}, {{SSBU|Mario}}, {{SSBU|Roy}}, and {{SSBU|Pyra}}/{{SSBU|Mythra}} had the lowest standard deviation, while {{SSBU|King Dedede}}, {{SSBU|Pichu}}, {{SSBU|Little Mac}}, {{SSBU|Marth}}, and {{SSBU|Ganondorf}} had the highest.

After ranking towards the middle on the first two lists despite strong results and representation, {{SSBU|Luigi}} skyrocketed into the top 20 and improved his standings by 21 spots, marking the largest rise between any ''Ultimate'' tier list. Likewise, {{SSBU|Olimar}} and {{SSBU|Hero}} also rose significantly, the former thanks to continued success from {{Sm|Shuton}} and additional strong results from {{Sm|Candle}}, and the latter as a result of improved performances from {{Sm|Akakikusu}} and {{Sm|BeastModePaul}}. {{SSBU|Bayonetta}}, {{SSBU|Falco}}, and {{SSBU|Toon Link}} all had notable rises as well thanks to their best players reaching new heights, especially in Japan. Finally, several characters who had notable drops on the previous tier list, including Roy and {{Sm|Ken}}, recouped some of their losses thanks to stronger results from their best players. In the lower tiers, the {{SSBU|Donkey Kong}} renaissance of 2024 led him to rise 15 spots, while {{SSBU|Kirby}} had the second-highest rise, rising 10 spots thanks to the efforts of {{Sm|Guilheww}} and {{Sm|JeJaJeJa}}. Finally, {{SSBU|Banjo & Kazooie}} and {{SSBU|Wii Fit Trainer}} both have noticeable rises, the former thanks to {{Sm|Toriguri}}'s meteoric rise, and the latter due to greater tournament success, especially at a regional level, thanks to dedicated mains such as {{Sm|Akari Mizunashi}}, {{Sm|Oolong}}, and {{Sm|X'avier}}.

Conversely, the absence and worse results from {{SSBU|Pac-Man}}, {{SSBU|Pokémon Trainer}}, and {{SSBU|Jigglypuff}}'s best players led them to drop double-digits, while {{SSBU|Sheik}} and {{SSBU|Lucina}} also had double-digit drops due to them being less effective in the newer metagame. Though he already had one of the largest drops in the second tier list, {{SSBU|Sephiroth}} dropped even further as his weaknesses became increasingly more frustrating for his players, becoming the character with the largest drop overall since the first tier list. The greatest drop on the third tier list, however, belongs to Marth, whose tipper issues and reputation as one of the least popular characters in competitive play caused him to drop 16 spots.

Unlike the previous year, no characters dropped in placement despite having higher scores, while on the other hand, {{SSBU|Duck Hunt}}, {{SSBU|Inkling}}, Lucas, {{SSBU|Mega Man}}, {{SSBU|Ness}}, {{SSBU|Piranha Plant}}, {{SSBU|Ridley}}, {{SSBU|R.O.B.}}, and {{SSBU|Yoshi}} all rose despite having lower scores.

==Tier list chart==
This table shows the ranks of each character through all of the tier lists, as well as a numbered description of their change in rank each time. "Change" lists how much a character's position changed between the two tier lists it is in between. "Highest" represents a character's highest position, "Lowest" represents their lowest position, and "Range" lists the difference between the highest and lowest position. "Overall change" represents a character's change between the first tier list and the current tier list.
