Koopa Troopas (ノコノコ, Nokonoko) are enemies from the Mario series.
The Koopa Troopa (Japanese: ノコノコ, Noko Noko) is a common enemy from the Mario universe which appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl. It appears in both green and red variations, as a common unit of the Koopa Troop.

Origin
<!--due to the small size of the image, captions are unreadable-->
Koopa Troopas made their debut in Super Mario Bros. as a common enemy, and has become a common enemy in later Mario games. Along with the Goombas, the Koopa Troopas are some of the most recognizable enemies of the Mario series. They are anthropomorphic turtle-like creatures that are commonly seen in their green and red variations. The green Koopa Troopas are mostly known for walking in one direction until they are defeated or they fall, while the red Koopa Troopas move back and forth on platforms and turn around at ledges.

Koopa Troopas are known for damaging the player on contact. If a Koopa Troopa is jumped on, they retreat into their shells rather than be defeated altogether, which can be kicked as projectiles. If the shells are left out for too long, however, the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of its shell. The kicked shells can also pose a danger if they bounce off of a wall.

In supermariowiki and in later games onward, if a Koopa Troopa is jumped on and retreats into its shell, it can be picked up, carried around. This, however, can be dangerous, as the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of the shell while carried and can damage the player holding the shell. In Super Mario World and in later games onward, the Koopa Troopas appear walking on two legs instead of four.

Prominent members of the Koopa Troopa race include mariowiki, one of Mario's party members in supermariowiki.

The Koopa Troopas feature a winged version: Koopa Paratroopa.

As an enemy
Green and red Koopa Troopas make an appearance in the first stage of Adventure Mode, where they walk back and forth. If the player makes contact with them, they will take damage. Damage and knockback varies on any difficulties. On very hard difficulty, if the player makes contact with them, they will take 40% damage with very powerful horizontal knockback, KO'ing the player almost at any percent. Simply attacking them makes them retreat into their shells. The player can pick up their shells and use them like the Green Shell item. Even if the shell is red from a red Koopa Troopa, it will function like a regular Green Shell, but also cause a fiery effect. The only difference is that the shells from the Koopa enemy don't disappear. The reason is after a short amount of time Koopa will come back out of its shell and walk back and forth again. This can happen even when the player is holding the shell. To permanently get rid of them, the player must throw them by picking them up with the "Z" button. The player can throw them at their opponents to give them a good amount of damage and sometimes even defeating them at low percentages.

Introduced during E3 2001, Koopa Troopas appear as a common enemy in the Mushroom Kingdom stage of Adventure Mode.

Koopa Troopas walk back and forth, turn around at ledges, and hurt the player on contact. Dealing enough damage by attacking them or jumping on them forces them to retreat into their shells. If the shell is left alone or carried for too long, then the Koopa Troopas will emerge out of their shells. Koopa Troopas can be defeated by grabbing and throwing the Koopa Troopa inside its shell, or by knocking it off a ledge, which will result in a Koopa KO bonus where the player receives 200 points for each Koopa Troopa KO'd.
Their stance they take in Melee is a crouching but walking on two legs, which is a mix between the original which they walked on all fours, and Super Mario World, which they had walked upright. Also, one 8-bit green Koopa Troopa cameos in the background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage.

Green Koopa Troopa shells can be grabbed, carried around, and thrown like the Green Shell item to KO other enemies or damage opponents. Red Koopa Troopa shells also function similarly to the green variation, but deals fire damage and stronger damage and knockback upon contact.

As an enemy
Koopa Troopas make an appearance in Brawl's Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. The green and red versions appear as ground enemies in stages where Bowser's minions are present. Unlike their Melee counterparts, Koopa Troopas will not harm players that walk into them. Instead, they attack with a leaping headbutt. They are stompable like Goombas, and will gets into it's shell when stomped. The shell can be picked up like a normal shell and used like a normal shell, but Red Shells won't lock on enemies, unlike in Melee.

Similar to their Melee counterparts, the Koopa Troopas can retreat into their shells when damaged or jumped on; however, they cannot harm players on contact, but they attack with a leaping headbutt when close enough. Also, the Koopa Troopas can emerge from their shells, even while their shell is moving.

The Red Koopa Troopa trophy is exclusive to for3ds. The Green Koopa Troopa trophy appears in both versions. In forwiiu, it is part of the Bowser's Minions Trophy Box.
Koopa Troopas first appeared in Super Mario Bros., becoming one of the main enemies of the game, along with Goombas. Mario is able to stomp Koopa Troopas into their shells and kick these shells as projectiles. However, the shells can also pose a danger to Mario if they bounce off of a wall. Koopa Troopas have gone on to be recurring enemies and characters throughout the Mario series.
