Koopa Troopas appear as enemies. The green and red versions appear as ground enemies in stages where [[Bowser]]'s minions are present. Similar to their ''Melee'' counterparts, the Koopa Troopas can retreat into their shells when damaged or jumped on; however, they cannot harm players on contact, but they attack with a leaping headbutt when close enough. Also, the Koopa Troopas can emerge from their shells, even while their shell is moving.

The Koopa Troopa trophies can be obtained by using the [[Trophy Stand]] on the Green and Red Koopa Troopas in The Subspace Emissary.

During the Standard Kart spirit battle, Koopa Troopa uses an army of four Squirtles, referencing the Koopa Troopa and the {{s|mariowiki|Triple Green Shells}} depicted in the spirit artwork, and is fought on the [[Mario Circuit]] stage. During the battle, the Squirtle army will favor their [[Withdraw]] special, referencing how the Green Shells are used as an item in the ''Mario Kart'' series.
