Super Smash Bros. Ultimate winners Japan Miya

Kagaribi 8 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Tokyo, Japan, from July 30th-31st, 2022.

Tournament summary[edit]

Kagaribi 8 was initially ranked as a supermajor, however due to rising cases of COVID-19 in Japan, several top Japanese players, including acola, Tea, and Kome, dropped out of the tournament, demoting the tournament to just a major. It is currently the last tournament in the Kagaribi series that was not ranked as a supermajor.

The tournament is most known for being Miya's breakout offline event. Prior to this event, Miya was mostly known for being one of the best Smashmate players who was just beginning to make his mark offline. Entering the tournament as the #24 seed, Miya ran through the entire bracket, upsetting ProtoBanham 3-1, Shuton 3-2, and Abadango twice 3-1 and 3-2 to win the tournament without dropping a set. Miya's run was not only unexpected to players outside of Japan, but also marked Mr. Game & Watch's first-ever major win in Ultimate, a feat that not even Maister, the best Mr. Game & Watch player at that time, had done. In addition, this marked the second Kagaribi that was won by a first-time entrant, with acola having previously won Kagaribi 7.

Although overshadowed by Miya's run, Abadango saw arguably his best tournament run since the early metagame. Due to declining performances at tournaments and missing out on top 8 at every major since EGS Cup 3, Abadango was seeded 21st, a low seed for a player who was once one of Japan's best players. Despite this, Abadango made several notable upsets, defeating Kameme 3-0, Yoshidora 3-1, ProtoBanham 3-0, KEN 3-2, and Shuton 3-2 to ultimately place 2nd, the highest Abadango has placed at a major since his victory at Umebura SP 4. Most impressive about this run was that, aside from Yoshidora, all those upsets were performed with Meta Knight, a character that was mostly regarded as barely viable. As a result, Abadango's run marked the best tournament run for a Meta Knight player at an Ultimate major, while this run and Abadango's later run at VCA 2022 led to a reassessment on Meta Knight's viability.
