It debuted in the series' [[bulbapedia:Generation I|first generation]] as the second stage [[bulbapedia:Grass (type)|Grass-type]] {{iw|bulbapedia|starter Pokémon}} of {{iw|bulbapedia|Kanto}}, and is present as a playable character (via [[Pokémon Trainer]]) in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''.

Ivysaur is a dual Grass/Poison-type Pokémon and the evolved form of {{s|bulbapedia|Bulbasaur}}, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #002 as the "Seed Pokémon". Ivysaur appears as a moderately large, teal, quadrupedal frog-like Pokémon. It evolves from Bulbasaur evolves at level 16 onward, and then evolves into [[Venusaur]] at level 32 onward.

However, unlike in [[bulbapedia:Pokémon Red and Green Versions|''Pokémon Red'', ''Green'']], and [[bulbapedia:Pokémon Blue Version (Japanese)|''Blue'']], Bulbasaur is obtainable alongside its fellow Kanto starters {{s|bulbapedia|Squirtle}} and {{s|bulbapedia|Charmander}} under special conditions in ''{{s|bulbapedia|Pokémon Yellow Version}}'', and relatively early on in [[bulbapedia:Pokémon X and Y|''Pokémon X'' and ''Y'']].

Unlike Bulbasaur, the bulb on Ivysaur's back has partially bloomed into a pink bud with large green leaves, thanks to exposure from sunlight and apparently from drawing energy from Ivysaur's own body. The budding flower is heavy enough that Ivysaur has difficulty standing on its hind legs, but its four legs and torso grow thick and strong from the weight of the flower, even as a quadruped. Aside from assisting its bud's growth, sunlight also increases Ivysaur's strength.

Ivysaur, along with Squirtle, did not return as a playable character in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''. However, it does appear in both versions of ''Super Smash Bros. 4'' as a [[trophy]].

Ivysaur returns as a playable character as part of {{SSBU|Pokémon Trainer}}, alongside {{SSBU|Squirtle}} and {{SSBU|Charizard}}, in ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate''. Like Squirtle and Charizard, it is no longer subject to [[Pokemon Change#Stamina|stamina]], and thus remains effective throughout a fight. Unlike ''Brawl'', Pokémon Trainer is an unlockable character instead of a starter character.
