'''Great Bay''' ({{ja|グレートベイ|Gurēto Bei}}, ''Great Bay'') is a stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''. It is based on the eponymous location in ''The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask''. [[Young Link]] is fought here when being unlocked in both games he appears in.
'''Great Bay''' is a stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' that could be considered {{SSBM|Young Link}}'s [[home stage]] (it is where the player fights him when they attempt to unlock him, and Young Link was the main protagonist in ''The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask'', from which this stage originates).

In [[All-Star]] mode, this stage is where {{SSBM|Link}} and any of his teammates are faced.

[[File:Great Bay Coast.png|thumb|left|250px|The Marine Research Laboratory, as seen from the coast in ''Majora's Mask''.]]
The fighters battle in front of the {{s|zeldawiki|Marine Research Laboratory}} in the {{s|zeldawiki| Great Bay Coast}} from ''{{s|zeldawiki| The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask}}''.
This stage is from ''[[zeldawiki:The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask]]''. This stage takes place in the area in Termina called the Great Bay Coast. In ''Majora's Mask'', the player must travel to the [[zeldawiki:Marine Research Laboratory|Marine Research Laboratory]] that is in the middle of the water. In this stage in ''Melee'', players battle on the same platform that the lab is on. The overall design of the lab looks similar to how it appeared in ''Majora's Mask'', except the lower platform is now to the right of the building rather than in front of it and the lab and the platforms have been scaled down. In ''Majora's Mask'', the lab is facing toward the shore, but in this stage, the lab is facing away from shore. To warp between specific locations, and quicksave (Albeit, not in the Japanese version) in ''Majora's Mask'' [[Young Link|Link]] must hit an [[zeldawiki:Owl Statue#Majora's Mask|owl statue]] with his sword. One of the locations of the owl statues in ''Majora's Mask'' is on the lower platform of the Great Bay Marine Lab, hence why there is an owl statue in said position in the ''Melee'' stage. Like the laboratory, the owl statue also faces the other way around in ''Majora's Mask''.
The left side of the stage consists of three platforms. The bottom ones have enough space for two fighters, and the left one floats and reacts to the fighters' weights by rocking. The raised platform, which has barely enough space for four characters, is solid: this can be exploited by [[throw]]ing opponents against its bottom to cause a [[stage spike]] and possibly an early [[KO]]. However, in ''Ultimate'', players [[swim]] on the water's surface, so it's more difficult to KO with a stage spike than in ''Melee''.

The right side is occupied by a large turtle which acts as a platform. When the battle starts, the turtle is present and looks to the left: after about 30 seconds it sinks, carrying away any fighters still on it. It periodically emerges and sinks again, and can either look left or towards the screen. The trees on its back act as further platforms. The parts not covered by grass have lower [[traction]], like ice and oil. Notably, when the turtle is absent the right [[blast line]] is very far from the stage: therefore, staying on the right is in this situation very advantageous. In ''Ultimate'', however, the right blast line moves closer to the stage when the turtle sinks, reducing this effect somewhat.
''Majora's Mask'' is the debut game for the character Tingle. Tingle is seen hanging on a red balloon. If the player wants to talk to Tingle, Link must use a projectile, such as [[Hero's Bow|arrows]] to pop his balloon. First Tingle will pull a landing pose, then when Tingle is on the ground, he will prance around for a little bit, and blows another balloon to float back up to where he was. In this stage, Tingle can be seen hanging on a red balloon. The balloon can also be popped by attacking it. When Tingle lands, he puls the same landing pose, and prances around in the same fashion as he did in ''Majora's Mask'', and then inflates another balloon, returning to his original position.

[[File:Tingle Melee.png|thumb|left|[[Tingle]] standing in front of the {{iw|zeldawiki|Owl Statue}} in ''Melee''.]]
In ''Majora's Mask'' there is a [[zeldawiki:Turtle|giant turtle]] that must be awaken to get to the Great Bay Temple. If the turtle is woken up, he splashes upward. In this stage, the giant turtle is retained, but the turtle has been scaled down. The turtle still splashes when rising out of the water in a similar fashion to how he did it in ''Majora's Mask''. The palm trees that are on the turtle are also retained. However, the giant turtle never goes to the marine research lab, and the turtle also never goes back in the water.
[[Tingle]] floats around on a red balloon over the bottom right platform. His balloon acts as a platform: standing on it for enough time or attacking it makes it pop, causing Tingle to fall down on the ground or in the water while flailing his limbs. Contact with him in this state causes 1-2% [[damage]] and negligible [[knockback]]. After a while, he reinflates his balloon and floats back up: if Tingle falls on the lower left platform, when he reinflates his balloon he is trapped under the main platform and his balloon automatically pops.
[[File:MoonMM.png|thumb|200px|The moon as it originally appeared in ''Majora's Mask''.]]

The beach of the Great Bay Coast looks very similar to how it appeared in ''Majora's Mask''. The buildings, palm trees, umbrellas with towels under them, etc. have all been retained. In ''Majora's Mask'', beyond the beach are rocky cliffs with rock platforms along the wall. There is also a door, a rocky cliff, and rock platforms, which have also been retained in this stage.
The [[Moon]] in the background steadily falls: when it gets close enough to the ground, the Four Giants appear, stop it and throw it back up into the sky. The cycle lasts about three minutes, and has no effect on the gameplay.

===Ω form and Battlefield form===
In ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'', the [[Ω form]] and [[Battlefield form]] are set far above the water with the coast seen in the background. Tingle does not appear. The main platform is the same structure that the Marine Research Laboratory is on, but resized and reshaped to match {{SSBU|Final Destination}} and {{SSBU|Battlefield}}, respectively. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form are metallic and are unique to this form.

===Hazards Off===
Also in ''Majora's Mask'' the [[zeldawiki:Moon|Moon]] is falling towards [[zeldawiki:Termina|Termina]], and Link has three days or 72 hours to stop the moon from falling. The moon can be seen getting closer and closer as time progresses in ''Majora's Mask''. In this stage in ''Melee'', the moon can be seen falling closer towards the ground as time progresses. When the moon gets to a certain height, [[zeldawiki:Four Giants|four giant]]s which appear in ''Majora's Mask'' come and stop the moon, but the giants now push the moon back where it was previously. The design of the moon and the giants look similar to how they appeared in ''Majora's Mask'', but they all have also been scaled down. Also, the moon is facing east in ''Majora's Mask'', but is seen facing down in the stage in ''Melee''. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKClN6MFY0w]
With hazards off in ''Ultimate'', Tingle never appears and the turtle remains in its initial position.

This stage is based on the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay Coast}} of the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay}} region from ''{{iw|zeldawiki|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask}}'', and takes place on the platforms that house the {{iw|zeldawiki|Marine Research Laboratory}}; however, its structure and orientation are slightly different in this stage. In ''Ultimate'', the design of the Marine Research Laboratory and the buildings in the background have been changed to reflect their appearance in ''{{iw|zeldawiki|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D}}''. ''Ultimate'' also includes small additional details, such as a {{iw|zeldawiki|Heart Piece}} to the left in the background, in the same location as ''Majora's Mask''. The bay itself, contrary to how it looked in ''Majora's Mask'', is a much brighter and cleaner color in ''Melee''.

In ''Majora's Mask'', [[zeldawiki:Owl Statue#Majora's Mask|Owl Statues]] act as warp points when using the {{iw|zeldawiki|Song of Soaring}} and, in non-Japanese versions of the game, as quicksave points. One of such statues is outside the laboratory in Great Bay.
There are three tracks for this stage, two of which are usually heard. One track is an orchestrated version of the overworld theme from ''[[zeldawiki:The Legend of Zelda (Game)|The Legend of Zelda]]'' and the other track is a slightly remixed version of ''[[zeldawiki:Saria's Song|Saria's Song]]'' from ''[[zeldawiki:The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time|The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time]]''. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbsJVxLLA2c] In addition, the ''Fire Emblem'' theme plays here when fighting Marth in 1P modes.

The {{iw|zeldawiki|Turtle}} in ''Majora's Mask'' allows [[Young Link|Link]] to reach the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay Temple}} after it is awoken; however, it is found in a different location of Great Bay, nowhere near the laboratory.
==Description==
[[File:Melee Tingle.jpg|thumb|left|[[Tingle]] standing in front of an [[zeldawiki:Owl Statue|Owl Statue]] ]]
It is best to be large because of the setup of the level itself: The more space one can control on the small platforms on the side, the less vulnerable they are to any approach on that area. Staying to the right side of the stage also provides advantage due to the mismatched length of the stage; the area with the turtle has a very long distance to the wall unlike the other. Also, it is possible to perform a stage spike by hitting or throwing characters into the underside of the main platform, resulting in easy [[KO]]'s, especially for those with decently long forward or backward [[throw]]s.

[[Tingle]]'s design and behavior is also taken from ''Majora's Mask'', which is also his debut game. He appears in several locations floating from his balloon, including the Marine Research Laboratory. Link can pop his balloon to make him fall to the ground and purchase maps from him.
The left platform fits only about two people, and this is still a pretty small area for two people to be dueling. The bottom right platform is equivalent in size and shape. Above and between the two small side platforms, there is a long platform that is the main fighting area. This platform is flat without any obstacles<nowiki>,and provides an easy KO oppurtunity; by having a character's back face the bottom of the main platform, using a back throw will result in them hitting the bottom of the platform and tumbling into the water, taking down the unwary opponent, even at low percentages.</nowiki>The main platform can fit four fighters, but only about three comfortably. Sporadically, a large, green turtle will appear in either of two orientations to the right of the stage. After about half a minute, the turtle will sink back into the ocean, KOing any players who stand on it. On its shell, it has green grass that provides normal movement [[traction]] for characters, but any spots of the turtle not covered by grass will work like a slick surface (i.e. ice or oil). Additionally, the turtle has trees on its shell that players can stand on.

In ''Majora's Mask'', a [[Skull Kid]], under possession by the evil {{iw|zeldawiki|Majora's Mask|Item}}, sends the [[Moon]] on a collision course with {{iw|zeldawiki|Termina}}. Link has three in-game days to stop it, which is accomplished by freeing the {{iw|zeldawiki|Four Giants}}, who are able to catch the moon before it hits {{iw|zeldawiki|Clock Town}}. The time limit can be extended by traveling back in time to the beginning of the first day. The 3-minute cycle in this stage is a likely reference to the original 3-day cycle.
[[Tingle]], from ''The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask'', also appears on this stage. Tingle floats around on a red balloon on the right side of the stage, directly above the right-bottom platform. It is possible to pop his balloon, causing him to flail his arms and legs and fall to the ground or water below. While he is flailing his arms and legs, he can deal 1-2% [[damage]] with negligible [[knockback]]. It's also possible for Tingle to fall into the water.

Great Bay is banned in tournaments, the primary reason being that the stage allows for ample [[camping]] opportunities, including circle camping, by allowing characters to easily go from one bottom platform to the other, through going underneath the impassable main platform or over the top of it. The main platform can also allow very early [[KO]]s from [[stage spike|stage spiking]] when players fight on the lower platforms.

*In a early version of the game, the Marine Research Lab in the background was part of the arena, allowing characters to walk in and out of it. It was moved into the background in the final version. Furthermore, the platform on the right side of the stage had only three "pillars" composing it, instead of the five in the final version.
[[File:Great Bay Heart Piece SSBU.jpg|thumb|150px|The hidden Piece of Heart in ''Ultimate''.]]
*In early builds of ''Melee'', the Marine Research Lab in the background was part of the arena, allowing characters to walk in and out of it. It was moved into the background in the final version, though some remnants of the idea can be seen by using unrestricted camera hacks. Furthermore, the platform on the right side of the stage was composed by only three beams instead of the final five, much like the lab's appearance in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Hacked cameras show that there's a complete underwater floor below the stage.
*To the left of the main cove where the platform exists is a second cove; within it is a cluster of 6 islets, matching {{iw|zeldawiki|Fisherman's Island}}, the location of a minigame in which the player must jump to the designated island in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Great Bay is the only retro ''The Legend of Zelda'' stage to not be in either version of ''[[Smash 4]]''.
*In ''Ultimate'', there is a {{iw|zeldawiki|Piece of Heart}} to the left of the main cove in a hole in the cliff, matching the location of the Piece of Heart in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Because the [[Moon]] is already part of the stage, Great Bay is one of the stages where it cannot be summoned as an Assist Trophy. Additionally, [[Phosphora]] and [[Kapp'n]] can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms. [[Abra]] and [[Marshadow]] also can only be summoned on the Battlefield and Omega forms.
*If {{SSBU|Meta Knight}} uses [[Shuttle Loop]] under the main platform while above the water, he will be KO'd instantly when he loops back up.
