'''Great Bay''' ({{ja|グレートベイ|Gurēto Bei}}, ''Great Bay'') is a stage in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''. It is based on the eponymous location in ''The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask''. [[Young Link]] is fought here when being unlocked in both games he appears in.


In [[All-Star]] mode, this stage is where {{SSBM|Link}} and any of his teammates are faced.
==Stage Design==
Great Bay is a level is [[Super Smash Bros. Melee]] that could be considered [[Young Link]]'s stage, and is where you fight him when you attempt to unlock him. This level is quite fair, although the advantage goes to the large character, instead of the small. The reason why it is better to be large in this level is because of the set up of the level it's self. On the left there is a platform that is parallel with the water, and is resting on it, seemingly floating.


==Stage overview==
The water doesn't affect you much in this game, except letting you know when you are too far down. The left platform fits only about 2 people, and that is still pretty small for brawling. Until about halfway through the float, and a [[Bowser]] height upwards, there is a long platform that is the main fighting platform. It is flat without any obstacles. Occasionally there is Tingle, but we'll discuss that later. The main platform could fit 4 fighters, but only about 3 contenders comfortably. The bottom right stage is the in equivalent opposite space as the one on the far left, but does not rock. It is made of the same steel logs as the main platform, just placed the other direction. There is a huge turtle on the right of the rightmost platform, and can fit about 3 fighters.

The fighters battle in front of the {{s|zeldawiki|Marine Research Laboratory}} in the {{s|zeldawiki| Great Bay Coast}} from ''{{s|zeldawiki| The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask}}''.
The left side of the stage consists of three platforms. The bottom ones have enough space for two fighters, and the left one floats and reacts to the fighters' weights by rocking. The raised platform, which has barely enough space for four characters, is solid: this can be exploited by [[throw]]ing opponents against its bottom to cause a [[stage spike]] and possibly an early [[KO]]. However, in ''Ultimate'', players [[swim]] on the water's surface, so it's more difficult to KO with a stage spike than in ''Melee''.


The right side is occupied by a large turtle which acts as a platform. When the battle starts, the turtle is present and looks to the left: after about 30 seconds it sinks, carrying away any fighters still on it. It periodically emerges and sinks again, and can either look left or towards the screen. The trees on its back act as further platforms. The parts not covered by grass have lower [[traction]], like ice and oil. Notably, when the turtle is absent the right [[blast line]] is very far from the stage: therefore, staying on the right is in this situation very advantageous. In ''Ultimate'', however, the right blast line moves closer to the stage when the turtle sinks, reducing this effect somewhat.
The turtle rises up, sometimes facing different directions, and then sinks down into the ocean, where you die if you remain on it. It has green grass on it's shell, but where the shell is exposed, it is slippery as ice. You can get a [[wavedash]] boost or have a hard time turning on it. The turtle has two trees on it, that, when facing either left or right, you can stand on and down drop from them. Then there is the obstacle of the level: Tingle. Yes, Tingle. From The [[Legend of Zelda]] Majora's Mask game. Tingle floats around on a balloon going up and down mostly, but occasionally gently swaying left and right. You can hit his red balloon, when then pops, causing him to flail his arms and legs and fall to the ground (or water) below. When he is flailing his arms and legs for the 1 second that he does, you can take up to 2% damage, but close to no [[knockback]].

==Artistic Design==
[[Tingle]] floats around on a red balloon over the bottom right platform. His balloon acts as a platform: standing on it for enough time or attacking it makes it pop, causing Tingle to fall down on the ground or in the water while flailing his limbs. Contact with him in this state causes 1-2% [[damage]] and negligible [[knockback]]. After a while, he reinflates his balloon and floats back up: if Tingle falls on the lower left platform, when he reinflates his balloon he is trapped under the main platform and his balloon automatically pops.
The artistic flare of Great Bay has always been a favorite of SSBM players. The left platform of the level is apparently a moss covered rock. This can be said because, if you look underwater, you can see other rocks that look identical to the floating one underneath it on the sandbed. The main platform is a dome building with a giant hook on the top. Below the buildings are a few pots and a sign that you see all too often in the Legend of Zelda series. There is a ladder that goes from the main upper platform to the lower right one which has the owl statue just like in the game.


The [[Moon]] in the background steadily falls: when it gets close enough to the ground, the Four Giants appear, stop it and throw it back up into the sky. The cycle lasts about three minutes, and has no effect on the gameplay.
The turtle looks very good. His eyes open and shut, he raises and lowers his head, he opens and shuts his mouth. His shell looks like it has more detail than its head though, and it looks kind of awkward. The background is very well done. It is a beach with a small village on it no more than 200 feet from where you fight. The village and beach are surrounded by large hills, and behind them there is a mountain range that reaches through out the level.

===Ω form and Battlefield form===
But not all is peaceful. Probably the most remembered thing about the stage itself  is the Moon. It's the same Moon from Majora's Mask, red and yellow eyes, large nose and angry mouth. Sure it's creepy enough, but what makes it so memorable? It falls to the village. It comes closer and closer and closer until you swear that you were done for. Then, at the last minute, four spirits come out from the mountains and push the moon back into the sky for another 10,000 years, showing the artistic thought put into this level.
In ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'', the [[Ω form]] and [[Battlefield form]] are set far above the water with the coast seen in the background. Tingle does not appear. The main platform is the same structure that the Marine Research Laboratory is on, but resized and reshaped to match {{SSBU|Final Destination}} and {{SSBU|Battlefield}}, respectively. The three soft platforms of the Battlefield form are metallic and are unique to this form.

This stage is based on the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay Coast}} of the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay}} region from ''{{iw|zeldawiki|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask}}'', and takes place on the platforms that house the {{iw|zeldawiki|Marine Research Laboratory}}; however, its structure and orientation are slightly different in this stage. In ''Ultimate'', the design of the Marine Research Laboratory and the buildings in the background have been changed to reflect their appearance in ''{{iw|zeldawiki|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D}}''. ''Ultimate'' also includes small additional details, such as a {{iw|zeldawiki|Heart Piece}} to the left in the background, in the same location as ''Majora's Mask''. The bay itself, contrary to how it looked in ''Majora's Mask'', is a much brighter and cleaner color in ''Melee''.
In ''Majora's Mask'', [[zeldawiki:Owl Statue#Majora's Mask|Owl Statues]] act as warp points when using the {{iw|zeldawiki|Song of Soaring}} and, in non-Japanese versions of the game, as quicksave points. One of such statues is outside the laboratory in Great Bay.
The {{iw|zeldawiki|Turtle}} in ''Majora's Mask'' allows [[Young Link|Link]] to reach the {{iw|zeldawiki|Great Bay Temple}} after it is awoken; however, it is found in a different location of Great Bay, nowhere near the laboratory.
[[Tingle]]'s design and behavior is also taken from ''Majora's Mask'', which is also his debut game. He appears in several locations floating from his balloon, including the Marine Research Laboratory. Link can pop his balloon to make him fall to the ground and purchase maps from him.
In ''Majora's Mask'', a [[Skull Kid]], under possession by the evil {{iw|zeldawiki|Majora's Mask|Item}}, sends the [[Moon]] on a collision course with {{iw|zeldawiki|Termina}}. Link has three in-game days to stop it, which is accomplished by freeing the {{iw|zeldawiki|Four Giants}}, who are able to catch the moon before it hits {{iw|zeldawiki|Clock Town}}. The time limit can be extended by traveling back in time to the beginning of the first day. The 3-minute cycle in this stage is a likely reference to the original 3-day cycle.

==Tournament legality==
Great Bay is banned in tournaments, the primary reason being that the stage allows for ample [[camping]] opportunities, including circle camping, by allowing characters to easily go from one bottom platform to the other, through going underneath the impassable main platform or over the top of it. The main platform can also allow very early [[KO]]s from [[stage spike|stage spiking]] when players fight on the lower platforms.

*In early builds of ''Melee'', the Marine Research Lab in the background was part of the arena, allowing characters to walk in and out of it. It was moved into the background in the final version, though some remnants of the idea can be seen by using unrestricted camera hacks. Furthermore, the platform on the right side of the stage was composed by only three beams instead of the final five, much like the lab's appearance in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Hacked cameras show that there's a complete underwater floor below the stage.
*To the left of the main cove where the platform exists is a second cove; within it is a cluster of 6 islets, matching {{iw|zeldawiki|Fisherman's Island}}, the location of a minigame in which the player must jump to the designated island in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Great Bay is the only retro ''The Legend of Zelda'' stage to not be in either version of ''[[Smash 4]]''.
*In ''Ultimate'', there is a {{iw|zeldawiki|Piece of Heart}} to the left of the main cove in a hole in the cliff, matching the location of the Piece of Heart in ''Majora's Mask''.
*Because the [[Moon]] is already part of the stage, Great Bay is one of the stages where it cannot be summoned as an Assist Trophy. Additionally, [[Phosphora]] and [[Kapp'n]] can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms. [[Abra]] and [[Marshadow]] also can only be summoned on the Battlefield and Omega forms.
*If {{SSBU|Meta Knight}} uses [[Shuttle Loop]] under the main platform while above the water, he will be KO'd instantly when he loops back up.
