Origin
Origin
Gilgamesh is the prince of Babylim, a small medieval kingdom. When the demon Druaga invaded a tower and stole the holy Blue Crystal Rod, one of Gil's friends—a shrine maiden named Ki—prayed to the goddess Ishtar, and was given the task of infiltrating the tower and retrieving the Crystal Rod. However, Druaga turned her into a stone and trapped her at the top of the tower, splitting the Crystal Rod into three. Gil, hearing of this, prayed to the gods for assistance in rescuing her. He received enchanted golden armor from the gods, and set off to climb the 60 floors of the Tower of Druaga, obtaining treasure and defeating monsters along the way. After upgrading his armor to Hyper Armor and collecting the three Crystal Rods, Gil defeats Druaga, reforms the Blue Crystal Rod, and rescues Ki. The two then battle their way back to the tower's entrance and return the Blue Crystal Rod back to the gods. Gil later marries Ki and inherits the title of king of Babylim.
Gil first appeared in the 1984 arcade game The Tower of Druaga. The game featured Gil traversing the titular tower's 60 floors, fighting monsters and obtaining treasure in order to rescue the shrine maiden Ki from the demon Druaga.

Gil's Hyper Armor is the basis of a downloadable content costume for Mii Swordfighter. The costume is not based on any particular appearance of Gil, but rather serves as an amalgamation of several of his designs with some details original to the Smash design. Aesthetically, it bears the closest resemblance to his design from Namco × Capcom.
Gil's Hyper Armor is the basis of a downloadable content costume for Mii Swordfighters. His original sprite in his default armor from The Tower of Druaga can also appear in Pac-Man's Namco Roulette taunt.

The Gil costume for Mii Swordfighter returns as DLC as part of Round 7 and was released on October 13th, 2020. The design has been updated from SSB4, most closely resembling Gil's design from The Return of Ishtar, with some minor elements taken from his design in the PC Engine release of The Tower of Druaga and Namco x Capcom.
Gil's Mii costume reveal trailer for Ultimate contains multiple references to The Tower of Druaga. The first scene shows Gil ascending a set of stairs on Dracula's Castle; a staircase acts as the primary goal of each level. The second scene shows Gil defeating Marth in his gold costume (representing the enemy Hyper Knight) and Ridley in his green costume (representing the dragon-like enemy Quox), upon which he picks up a key. In addition to enemies from the game, this also references how on each floor, Gil must find a key that allows him to reach the staircase and clear the level. The final scene shows Gil approaching a metallic Stone Kirby. This represents Ki, who was transformed into a stone by Druaga and must be transformed back to finish the game. The stage shown is Mario Bros., which closely resembles the look of The Tower of Druaga with its red flooring.
Gil's sprite also returns in Pac-Man's Namco Roulette taunt.
