Mewtwo Strikes! is the 44th event match of the 51 event matches in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Event Match 44: Mewtwo Strikes! is one of the 51 Event Matches from the Event Mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee.  The opponents are both Zelda and Mewtwo. The match starts off with Zelda, and she can be attacked without penalty, but KO'ing her causes the match to end in failure. Mewtwo joins the fight after fifteen seconds - KO'ing him is the goal.

The player controls a fighter of their choice and must win a 1 stock match against a CPU Zelda and a CPU Mewtwo on the Battlefield stage. This event match features no time limit. The CPU Zelda's artificial intelligence is set at Level 9, while the CPU Mewtwo's artificial intelligence is set at Level 8.
Strategy
Attack Mewtwo with attacks and items. When he has a lot of damage, throw him out of the stage or use a smash attack to finish him off. The strategy for the quickest KO is to go where Mewtwo spawns and use Jigglypuff's Rest when he appears. Another good strategy is to Kirbycide when Mewtwo spawns. Sometimes, Mewtwo will even self-destruct on accident.
When the match starts, the player's fighter will spawn on the center of the main platform, while Zelda spawns on the topmost soft platform. The match starts off with the player's fighter battling Zelda. After 15 seconds, Mewtwo will spawn on the leftmost soft platform and joins Zelda to battle the player's fighter. If the player KOs Mewtwo, it will result in a victory. If the player KOs Zelda, it will result in a loss.

Trivia
Trivia
*The CPU Zelda's model features a slightly darker tint in this event match, similar to the tint applied to identical characters on the same team.
*During the battle, the music from Poké Floats plays.
*The music track that plays during this event match is an arrangement of the music tracks featured in Pokémon Red/Blue, despite the fact the event match takes place on the Battlefield stage. This occurrence happens again during Event 37: Legendary Pokémon, as well as All-Star Mode when the main opponent is Mewtwo.
*The title and situation of the event match are based on the movie Mewtwo Strikes Back. Mewtwo psychically controls Nurse Joy and tries to destroy the world. In the case of the event match, Joy is replaced with Zelda.
*This event match is a reference to a plot point in the film, Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back, where Mewtwo turns Nurse Joy into his mind-controlled servant. Prior to introducing himself, Nurse Joy instead introduced the various characters to Mewtwo's base.
*Ironically, despite this event match's goal of KO'ing Mewtwo, Zelda is actually stronger, having her artificial intelligence set at Level 9 instead of Level 8, which allows her to deal 20% more knockback while Mewtwo has no such bonuses.
