In the ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'' [[Nintendo Direct]] on November 1st, 2018, [[Masahiro Sakurai]] confirmed that paid DLC would be available for ''Ultimate''. The initial wave of content comes in the form of five '''Challenger Pack''' bundles, each containing one entirely unique fighter, one stage, and several [[music]] tracks. These bundles, which are also available through a complete pack known as the '''Fighters Pass''', had the release deadline of February 29, 2020. Additionally, {{SSBU|Piranha Plant}} was available for free as a limited time early purchase bonus, and is currently available for purchase separate from the Fighters Pass. On November 6th, 2018, Sakurai announced on his Twitter account that the initial DLC line-up was finalized, and that potential fighters were proposed by Nintendo, with Sakurai passing final approval on them.<ref>https://twitter.com/Sora_Sakurai/status/1059958604818657282</ref>

Updates to the game are downloadable at no extra cost. In order to use DLC and access [[online]] modes, the game must be updated to the latest version, which can be done automatically by starting the game from [[Nintendo Switch|the system]]'s Home Menu, or manually triggered from the Switch's Home Menu. Most updates also adjust game balance and mechanics, while fixing [[glitch]]es and other errors as well. Changelogs for all updates are available at the links above.

As with any other game, DLC data is added via free updates. Completing a transaction to receive DLC is merely a "ticket" to grant access to said content. What this means is that DLC not purchased in an updated version is still technically installed but locked, and thus is accessible indirectly. Content that is locked can be seen and played against with opponents connecting via a system that has paid for the DLC (within Wireless and Online modes). Aside from this, locked content can also be seen using [[amiibo]] as [[Figure Player]]s, and saving uploaded or shared [[replays]].

==Fighters==
As every veteran is in the base game and none were cut, all DLC characters are newcomers.
Just like in ''Smash 4'', DLC characters (with the exception of Piranha Plant) have no unique [[Palutena's Guidance]] conversations and instead use the generic one.

===Early Purchase Bonus===
After awakening 10 fighters in [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], all downloaded DLC fighters are unlocked for use as well.

===Round 8===
The eighth wave of Mii Fighter costumes released alongside Challenger Pack 8 on December 22nd, 2020 and features outfits from ''[[Final Fantasy (universe)|Final Fantasy VII]]'', as well as the returning Chocobo Hat (also from the ''Final Fantasy'' series) and Geno costume from ''Smash 4''. These costumes were notably revealed at the beginning of their corresponding ''[[Mr. Sakurai Presents]]'' presentation rather than the end, as Barret, Tifa, and Aerith's costumes were used during Sephiroth's demonstration.

While some [[Spirit]]s are available for free, usually launched during [[Spirit Board]] events, others require a purchase from another character. These spirits (excluding [[Fighter spirit]]s, which can be unlocked through {{SSBU|Classic Mode}} or purchased from the shop for 300 coins) can be accessed through a special [[DLC Spirits (mode)|DLC-exclusive Spirit Board]] that does not have spirits expire or use the [[Puppet fighter]] scene.
While most [[spirit]]s are available for free, usually launched during [[Spirit Board]] events or with the release of a new Challenger Pack DLC, DLC [[fighter spirit]]s cannot be obtained without owning their corresponding Challenger Pack. Fighter spirits can be unlocked through {{SSBU|Classic Mode}} or purchased from the [[Shop]] for 300 coins. Spirits associated with an owned Challenger Pack can be fought and obtained through a special [[DLC Spirits (mode)|DLC Spirit Board]] that does not have spirits expire or use the [[Puppet fighter]] scene; otherwise, they may appear for purchase in the Vault Shop whether their corresponding Challenger Pack is owned or not. Spirits introduced in Spirit Board events are initially obtainable only for the duration of that event, and become permanently available at a later date.

During the development of ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'', several [[spirit]]s received changes due to [[List of updates (SSBU)|updates]], {{h2|Downloadable content (SSBU)|Challenger Packs}}, or purchasable {{h2|Downloadable content (SSBU)|Mii Costumes}}.

<!--NOTICE BEFORE EDITING: When using pronouns, SW:MoS states that they match the gender of the default. If referring to one gender, only refer to the alternate when it specifically applies to them. However, completely omitting pronouns and always using the character's name instead is entirely a valid style, as long as the sentence stays coherent. Additionally, please don't add anything about the criticism towards Byleth's reveal trailer in particular, or even that of Byleth himself.-->
<!--NOTE: Please don't add anything about the criticism towards any of the fighter's reveal trailers. This especially applies to Byleth.-->
*{{SSBU|Piranha Plant}} is the only DLC character with a unique Palutena's Guidance conversation.
*Following the announcement of the {{SSBU|Hero}} and {{SSBU|Banjo & Kazooie}}, the [[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Official Site]] went from listing six DLC characters ({{SSBU|Piranha Plant}}, {{SSBU|Joker}}, and four "unknown"/empty slots) to listing eight (adding the Hero and Banjo & Kazooie without removing any of the empty slots). As there was no corresponding announcement of additional downloadable characters, this was likely an error, and it was later fixed.
*With the sole exception of Piranha Plant (referred to by its Japanese name "packun"), every downloadable fighter’s name in the code differs from that of their actual names. {{SSBU|Joker}}'s code name is "jack" ([[Arsène]]'s code name is "doyle"), {{SSBU|Hero}}'s is "brave," {{SSBU|Banjo & Kazooie}}'s is "buddy" (with Kazooie specifically sometimes referred to as "partner"), {{SSBU|Terry}}'s is "dolly," {{SSBU|Byleth}}'s is "master," {{SSBU|Min Min}}'s is "tantan," Steve's is "pickel" ([[Creeper]]’s codename is "scarier"), Sephiroth's is "edge," {{SSBU|Pyra}}'s is "eflame," {{SSBU|Mythra}}'s is "elight," as a pair Pyra & Mythra's is "element" ([[Rex]]'s codename is "diver"), {{SSBU|Kazuya}}'s is "demon" and {{SSBU|Sora}}'s is "trail."
**Additional downloadable characters beyond the Fighters Pass Vol. 1 were announced alongside {{SSBU|Terry}}, but this was almost certainly a coincidence, as Terry's addition to the site did not come with any additional blank slots, and after {{SSBU|Byleth}}'s announcement, it was specified that six characters will be part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, one of them being the unknown ''ARMS'' character.
*According to [[Masahiro Sakurai]], Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was originally going to have five Challenger Packs as with the first Pass, but Sora's inclusion was secured after the other five fighters were already determined, resulting in an "extra" Challenger Pack.<ref>https://twitter.com/PushDustIn/status/1450855082203901954</ref>
*The first four DLC fighters' artwork on the [[:File:SSBU_Panoramic.png|panoramic artwork]] have depicted two characters: Piranha Plant is seen watering a [[Pikmin]], Joker is joined by [[Morgana]], the Hero is joined by a Slime, and both Banjo and Kazooie are depicted. Terry and Byleth both break this pattern.
*Following most DLC fighter reveals, the [[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Official Site]] was mistakenly updated to add fighter slots for recently revealed fighters without removing corresponding "mystery fighter" slots, resulting in extra empty slots that never corresponded to actual unrevealed fighters.
*Terry is the first DLC character to not involve at least one other character to assist him in his [[Final Smash]], as Piranha Plant summons [[Petey Piranha]], Joker summons the [[All-Out Attack|Phantom Thieves]] in one of two groups of three, the Hero summons the seven other Heroes not represented as costumes, and Banjo and Kazooie summon a group of [[Jinjo]]s and [[The Mighty Jinjonator]]. Byleth, while also only featured by himself in the panoramic artwork, is powered up by [[Sothis]] in his Final Smash.
*Banjo, Kazooie, Min Min, and Sora are the only DLC characters whose voice clips are recycled from their own games rather than recorded specifically for ''Smash'', while Piranha Plant and Steve are the only DLC fighters to not have any voice clips.
*Piranha Plant, Byleth and the unrevealed ''ARMS'' character are currently the only first-party DLC characters.
*In North America, when trailers for new Mii Fighter costumes are shown off, costumes of characters that are from a franchise that typically have M-rated installments from the ESRB only show the name of the character alongside the ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' logo, rather than the logo of the franchise the character is from. This has occurred with [[Altaïr]] (''Assassin's Creed''), [[Vault Boy]] (''Fallout''), [[Travis Touchdown]] (''No More Heroes''), [[Dragonborn]] (''The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim''), [[Dante]] (''Devil May Cry''), and [[Doom Slayer]] (''Doom'').
**Byleth is the only first-party character in the Fighters Pass Vol. 1.
**Four of the Mii Fighter costume reveals would additionally gain a "rated TEEN by the ESRB" notice when the character's respective logo for a series that typically has T-rated installments from the ESRB appeared, those being the [[Monster Hunter|Hunter's Mail]] and [[Rathalos#As_a_Costume|Rathalos Mail]] (both from ''Monster Hunter''), [[Lloyd Irving|Lloyd]] (''Tales of Symphonia''), and [[Shantae]] (the series of the same name, possibly referring to the games ''Shantae and the Pirate's Curse'', ''Shantae: Half-Genie Hero'' and ''Shantae and the Seven Sirens'', as the first two installments are not T-rated).
***However, ''Banjo-Kazooie'' was originally a second-party Nintendo property prior to Rare's acquisition by Microsoft.
**Oddly, even though Altair, Vault Boy, and Travis' game logos were shown in the European versions of their trailers, this did not happen with Dragonborn, Dante or Doom Slayer, as their game logos are only shown in the Japanese versions of their trailers.
*Thus far, every DLC fighter on the Fighters Pass has had a cinematic [[Final Smash]]. Additionally, every DLC stage has featured other characters making cameos on the stage.
**''Persona'', another series that typically has M-rated installments, did not originally follow this pattern. However, starting with Byleth's presentation, the North American versions of the ''Mr. Sakurai Presents'' presentations removed the logos of the games each of the DLC fighters hail from when showing an overview of the Fighters Passes, possibly due to ''Persona 5'''s rating.
*Challenger Pack 4 currently holds the most music added as downloadable content in both ''Ultimate'' and [[Downloadable content (SSB4)|''SSB4'']]'s history, with a total of 50 tracks.
***Later in 2022, an [https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/take-a-look-back-at-super-smash-bros-fighter-reveals-with-masahiro-sakurai-part-2/ article] on Nintendo's website detailing ''Ultimate''{{'}}s reveal trailers refers to ''Persona 5'' as "Joker's original game".
**Similarly, ''Fatal Fury'' has the highest music count out of any third party company across both games, due to the various tracks from multiple series.
**In a similar vein, the UK version of the ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' website shows Kazuya's series as ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' × ''Kazuya'' rather than ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' × ''Tekken'' like in other regions. The logos for other franchises in the "Display by Series" option of the Fighters page would later be removed from the European websites due to this.
*Byleth is currently the only Fighters Pass character that was revealed during their presentation, rather than before. While none of Joker's contents were revealed prior to his presentation, the character himself was announced 4 months prior at the Game Awards 2018. Similarly, while the ''ARMS'' fighter itself is only going to be revealed in their presentation, the announcement of a character from ''ARMS'' in ''Smash'' was made 3 months prior.
*Oddly, when the Mii Fighter costumes for [[Barret]] and [[Tifa]] were shown, the trailer in Sephiroth's ''Mr. Sakurai Presents'' video as well as the separately-uploaded trailer with the Wave 8 Mii costumes uploaded the same day shows the logo of ''Final Fantasy VII'' next to the ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' logo. However, the separate video was taken down and reuploaded on January 11, 2021, and the ''Final Fantasy VII'' logo was changed to just ''Final Fantasy''.
*Challenger Pack 5 is the only one so far to include music tracks that can play in multiple stages.
**This may be due to rating issues, which can be evidenced by how Sephiroth's page on the North American website includes a "''FINAL FANTASY VII'' RATED TEEN BY THE ESRB" message, which also applies to Pyra/Mythra and Kazuya's pages with their respective games.
*With the exception of Piranha Plant (referred to by its Japanese name "packun"), every downloadable fighter’s name in the code differs from that of their actual names.
**Despite that, the ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' × ''Final Fantasy'' screen still appears during the [[Chocobo]] reveal, though this is likely due to the fact that the character is not tied to any specific installment.
**Joker's code name is "jack", Hero's is "brave", Banjo & Kazooie's is "buddy", Terry's is "dolly", and Byleth's is "master".
*At the end of October 2019, on the North American English-language official site only, Piranha Plant's purchase cost was incorrectly changed from US$4.99/CA$6.29 to US$5.99/CA$7.55 to match all of the other fighters. This error remains as of October, 2023.<ref>[https://smashbros.nintendo.com/buy/dlc/]</ref> The actual eShop price charged remains the correct (lower) price. This error does not appear to be present in any other languages or regions.
**Joker and Hero's codenames were discovered prior to their actual release by dataminers on a leaked copy.
*Masahiro Sakurai revealed in a [[YouTube]] video that he considered releasing all music tracks in the base game as free downloadable content. This is due to the combined ROM data having been larger than the allotted 16 gigabytes of space a [[Nintendo Switch]] cartridge could hold at the time. This was prevented when a new way to compress audio files was invented so music tracks now take up a quarter of the space they used to without any loss in audio quality.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDrNWAHaKfI=329s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate <nowiki>[Game Concepts]</nowiki>]</ref>
*[[Banjo & Kazooie]] and [[Terry]] are the only members of the Fighters Pass Vol. 1 who:
**were not silent protagonists.
**could not be named by the player.
**are not from a role-playing game.
**are not voiced in multiple languages in their origin games. Banjo & Kazooie only have an English voice actor while Terry only has a Japanese voice actor. Although the Luminary only has a Japanese voice actor in ''Ultimate'', he had both an English and Japanese voice actor in ''Dragon Quest 11''.
**appeared in the first games of their series. Joker debuted in the fifth ''Persona'' game, none of the Heroes are from the original ''Dragon Quest'', and Byleth debuted in the 17th main entry of the ''Fire Emblem'' series.
*Because the credits in Classic Mode are not updated when a new DLC character is added, Joker and Banjo & Kazooie are the only DLC characters whose voice actors are credited in Classic Mode, as Xander Mobus and Chris Sutherland are credited as the [[announcer]] and [[Klaptrap]] respectively.
