Coin Battle
Coin is a mode of Vs. play in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The objective is to collect as many Smash Coins - and, in Brawl and Wii U, Smash Bills - as possible within a time limit. The player holding the most Smash Coins at the end of the match wins. Coin battles have been removed entirely in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Overview[edit]
Coin battle is accessible as a rule like stock or time. The time limit can be adjusted, but not the stock amount as every player technically has an unlimited amount of stocks in this mode. Every selection screen functions as normal. If items are turned on, coins can be found in container items.
During gameplay, every player starts with zero coins, and coins (and bills in later entries) are produced when any attack hits an opponent. The coins launch out of the victim at an angle and velocity somewhat based on the properties of the attack. When the coins are launched, any player can collect them, even the victim after a grace period. The amount and value of the coins released depends on the strength of the attack, with the game prioritizing the least amount of coins and bills on-screen. If a player is hit, the coins ejected from their character is not taken away from their own total. However, players still take normal damage and knockback, and can "lose a stock" by getting launched into a blast line. Should this happen, the KO'd player will lose half of their total coins (to a maximum of 100 in Brawl and for Wii U). Several gold coins will also be launched from the blast zone, and can be grabbed if other players are fast enough. Should multiple fighters have an equal amount of coins when time runs out, the match will go to Sudden Death, with the winner being the last fighter standing. Here, the coins earned do not apply.
In Melee, there are copper, silver, and gold Smash Coins, worth one, five, and ten points respectively. In Brawl, the coins were lowered in value to one, three, and six points respectively, while a new item, the Smash Bill, is introduced. Bills flutter and fly erratically, making them difficult to pick up, but they are worth 10 points each.
Coin battles also take place in certain event matches, namely Spare Change, All MINE!, The Great Remodeling Battle, Four Swords Brawl, Jackpot Opportunity, A Royal Errand, and An Offering of Coins.
In Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Coin Battles cannot be played in 8-Player Smash.
Trivia[edit]
- Every Co-op coin event match requires both players to stay alive.
