Birdo (キャサリン, Catherine) is a character from the Mario series.

Origin
Character description
Birdo's appearance in Super Smash Brothers Melee is based on the classic 2D version of Birdo. Birdo is a pink dinosaur with a large tube-like mouth that shoots out eggs. Her stomach is white and she wears a big red bow on her head. She has two small arms and two small legs which help her move around.
Birdo made her debut in the Japan-only game mariowiki (repurposed as Super Mario Bros. 2 for international markets) as a recurring boss. She is a pink dinosaur creature with a nozzle-like mouth and a red bow. In her later appearances, she wears a diamond ring. As a boss character, Birdo attacks by spitting eggs at the player. She can be defeated by grabbing the flying eggs and throwing them back at her three times. Later worlds introduce different colored varieties of Birdos which attack by spitting fireballs at the player.

Like much of the content in Doki Doki Panic, Birdo was retained when the game was reworked for its North American release as Super Mario Bros. 2. Since then, Birdo has appeared in numerous Mario series games, being a boss once again in mariowiki and mariowiki, and a playable character in many installments of Mario spinoff series such as mariowiki and mariowiki.
Birdo originally appeared in the the game Super Mario Bros. 2 as an enemy that appeared at the end of every level. She would fire eggs from the opening in her mouth. The next appearance of Birdo was in the game Mario Tennis. She has not appeared in an adventure game since Super Mario Bros. 2, but she has appeared in some of the Mario sports titles and usually partners up with Yoshi. She was introduced as a secret playable character Mario Party 7 and appeared as a playable character again in Mario Party 8. In some of the Mario games, Birdo comes in different colors.

Birdo's gender is described as "indeterminate" in Brawl, referencing a long-standing debate in her home series. She was initially described as a male who "thinks he is a girl" in Super Mario Bros. 2s instruction booklet, suggesting that she is transgender. Most other game appearances refer to Birdo as female, but usually ignore her transgender identity as a whole. One mission in the 2008 Wii game wikipedia is based on the gender debate, tasking the player with finding evidence that Birdo is female after she was arrested for using the women's restroom.

Birdo will appears on either side of the screen of the Mushroom Kingdom 2 stage. She shoots three eggs from her mouth then exits on the side of the screen she came from. Any character that makes contact with the egg will take damage. The eggs can be shielded, jumped on, and air grabbed. Sometimes items come out of the eggs. It is possible to KO Birdo, but she will return to the stage later on. To KO Birdo, attack her with items and attacks. Birdo will flash the color blue when she takes damage. A few attacks will KO Birdo. No bonus points are rewarded for killing Birdo. Birdo's Egg can only be found in Kingdom II. When a Birdo appears on the stage and shoots eggs, they can be grabbed if timed right, and then thrown.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee
*Does 24% when thrown normally
As a stage hazard
*Does 49% and explodes when smash thrown

*Breaks when used
Birdo appears as a stage hazard in the Mushroom Kingdom II stage. She appears on either side of the screen and shoots one or three eggs from her mouth before exiting to the side where it came from. Birdo can be attacked and will temporarily retreat after receiving enough damage.
*Will rarely release an item
*It is the only item which will always explode in one circumstance and never explode in another

Birdo's eggs deal damage to those they hit. These eggs can be shielded against, jumped on, knocked away with attacks, and air grabbed. When air grabbed they are usable as items that deal 24% damage when thrown normally, explode and deal 49% when smash thrown, and occasionally drop items after breaking. It is the only item in the series that can explode by input rather than chance.
