The Beam Sword (ビームソード, Beam Sword) is a long-range battering item. It is similar in appearance to a wikipedia, and is often informally referred to as the "lightsaber" for this reason. Available in all five games, it can be wielded and charged for melee attacks or can be thrown, like all other battering items.

Origin
The Beam Sword is a long-range "clobbering weapon", similar in appearance to a lightsaber which is available in all three games. It can be wielded and charged for melee attacks or can be thrown. The Super Smash Bros. Melee Beam Sword is considerably weaker than it was in the original Super Smash Bros..  The length of Melee's Beam Sword changes depending on the character wielding it and the intensity of the attack performed.  The beam sword's smash attack generally has the longest range of all beam sword strikes.  In Melee and Brawl, it is possible for Peach to pull out a Beam Sword with her Vegetable attack, but this is incredibly rare. In its Brawl incarnation, the sword is blue, not pink.

The Beam Sword acts as a reference to similar weapons found in various wikipedia media, most prominently the wikipedia from the wikipedia franchise. The item's sound effects are similar to those found in lightsabers, including the distinctive swinging sounds and sharp crackling noise when two swords collide. These sound effects were modified in the PAL and American releases of Super Smash Bros. and all versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee to no longer resemble that of the lightsabers, but would be standardised to resemble the weapon in all regions from Super Smash Bros. Brawl onwards. Furthermore, starting with Melee, the Beam Sword's blade could retract in some animations, furthering the connection between the item and its source.
clrl

Operation
*When A is tapped, it does 7% damage.

*As a tilt attack, it does 11% damage
As a battering item, the Beam Sword will bolster the player's power, as well as potentially add some options to their game via throwing. In Melee and Brawl, the Beam Sword's range significantly increases in size, particularly in the case of charged smash attacks. In each of its subsequent appearances, its range has increased, with Brawl's variant of the weapon potentially having thrice the range of its Melee counterpart. With this, the beam of the blade can also pass through walls. In Super Smash Bros. 4, character-specific Beam Sword attacks, such as Marth and Roy's two-hit slashes, are no longer present.
*When used as a smash attack, it does 15% damage and can be charged to do up to 20%.
*When dropped, it does between 4-10% damage.
*When thrown at the opponent, it does 15% damage.
*In the original Japanese version of SSB, the Beam Sword sounded similar to a Light Saber from the Star Wars trilogy; and now in ssbb if they use this weapon

In Melee and Brawl, a Beam Sword is one of few unusual items Peach can pull out via her Vegetable attack, though the chances of this are slim (1 out of 58 chance). In addition, the behavior surrounding the event is unorthodox for Brawl; in the first minute of plucking the item, the sword's range is severely decreased, as Peach will use her item throwing animation rather than her standard item swinging animation. After a minute, the item pickup sound will play and the Beam Sword regains its usual properties, though the player can also toss the sword and pick it up again to restore its proper attributes.
*When held by either Link, Marth or Roy, the smash attack is a double smash; the character slashes with his regular sword and then takes a second stronger swipe with the Beam Sword.
*When held by Captain Falcon, the forward smash it is a weak hit below and then a strong upwards hit that knocks opponents skyward
*When held by Sheik, the forward smash is a very quick double hit, both upwards. The first hit is a bit stronger than Capt. Falcon’s, but the second is weaker than Capt. Falcon's second hit
*When held by Mewtwo, a dashing A attack is around 5 spinning hits (around 20 damage). When he smashes with it, he slices it downwards.
*The Beam Sword is pink in the first two games, but blue in Brawl.
*In SSBM and SSBB the beam sword will change it's length when it is picked up or when it is used. In SSB, however, it is always the same length.

"With its distinctive glowing blade, the Beam Sword is eye-catching and lethal. At first, the blade is about the size of a short sword, but the length changes depending on who wields it. The blade also lengthens in direct proportion to the power of an attack, so it reaches its maximum size when swung as a smash attack."
