To take a photo in Brawl, the player must pause during a fight and press the GCN button on the controller and Nunchuk, the WCC button on the Classic Controller, or the Wii button on the Wii Remote to take the photo, much like Camera Mode in Melee.

However, the player can still take snapshots from replays of WiFi matches.
Players can also take pictures of trophies that have been arranged in the Trophy Hoard or Sticker Centre, and send them to friends via WiiConnect24. For some reason, snapshots usually cost more coins to share than anything else.

The feature returns in Super Smash Bros. 4. During a match, when the player pauses the game, camera options will be displayed, allowing the player to switch cameras between participants, zoom in and out, pan across the battle field, rotate the camera, and take snapshots using certain buttons:

*3DS or 3DS on the Nintendo 3DS
*Wii U on the Wii U GamePad, Wii U Pro Controller, and Classic Controller
*Wii on the Controller and Wii Remote + Nunchuk
*Wii on the Wii Remote

Snapshots will be stored in the Album section of the Vault, located in Games & More, where they can be moved to player-created albums, commented upon, and deleted. Snapshots can be taken during most modes, excluding Home-Run Contest, Training,  Target Blast, Multi-Man Brawl, and Wi-Fi matches. Snapshots can still be taken from Wi-Fi matches. In the Wii U version, photos can only be taken if an SD card is inserted into the console.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Ultimate has no dedicated in-game Album, but screenshots are saved in the Nintendo Switch system's Album in the Home menu. This allows screenshots to be used outside of the game itself without third-party software, greatly expanding their utility.
