A grammar tip[edit]
The word "an" should only be used if the following word has its pronunciation begin with a vowel sound (e.g. an apple, an eel, an igloo, an orange, or an umbrella). If the following word begins with a consonant sound, always use "a" (e.g. a lemon, a pear, or a kiwi).
That being said, English is a very complicated language, since there are some words that begin with a consonant letter, but begin with a vowel sound (e.g. the "h" in "hour" is silent, thus it is pronounced like "OW-er", so the correct wording would be "an hour") and vice-versa (e.g. the "u" in "unicorn" is pronounced with a "yoo" sound, thus the correct wording would be a unicorn).
To start off, I suggest preceding every word that begins with a vowel letter (a, e, i, o, and u) with "an" and every word that begins with a consonant letter (every other letter) with "a" and we'll let you know if you were using the correct determiner.
Hope this helps you. SuperSmashTurtles of the Turtle Tribe 23:47, March 4, 2021 (EST)
