Other characters were considered or even planned to be playable, but were cut before the release. Most notably, the Ice Climbers were playable on this version of the game. However, Sakurai couldn't get them to work on the Nintendo 3DS version, no matter what he did, the Ice Climbers could not work on the 3DS Version, so he ultimately cut them. Datamining also revealed an unused emblem for Rhythm Heaven, meaning the series was supposed to have a representative character from that series. Takamaru was briefly considered as a playable character, but was cut due to low popularity. Chrom was considered to be added, but Sakurai picked Robin when he saw that Chrom was too similar to Marth and Ike. Heihachi Mishima was also strongly considered to be playable, but was dropped as Sakurai thought that implementing his attacks would be difficult. According to Masahiro Sakurai, he stated that Reggie Fils-Aime, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata were briefly considered to be playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, but this was decided against because Sakurai felt that the 3 game-developers would not appeal to a wide audience. He also stated that it takes a lot of work and effort to add a character to the game and it was a decision not to be taken lightly.
