Special Movie
<youtube>R7pLDXA9Org</youtube> |
The Special Movie is a nearly-fifteen minute long bonus video included in the NTSC versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee, found in the Archives sub-menu of the Data menu. The clip itself features the starter characters and their abilities, as well as various single-player modes (both Classic Mode and Adventure Mode), items, stages, and trophies.
Various elements different from the final game can be seen in this clip, such as Peach having different voice clips, and Temple having unused platforms.
The movie is not available in the PAL versions of Melee, speculated to be due to the inability to fit all translated languages of the movie onto the disc.
Content
The special movie is broken into 18 sections, as well as an introduction and ending.
Introduction
The Special Movie opens up by fading into several different matches. Several different sound effects play during this sequence, but they do not line up with the matches being displayed.

- One on Princess Peach's Castle between Ice Climbers, Yoshi, Mario, and Kirby,
- One on Onett between Ness, Fox, Pikachu, and Ice Climbers,
- One on Jungle Japes between Donkey Kong, Ice Climbers, Mario, and Ness,
- One on Fountain of Dreams between Bowser, Ice Climbers, Mario, and Kirby,
- One on Temple between Sheik, Bowser, Ness, and Yoshi,
- One on Kongo Jungle between Mario, Samus, Link, and Pikachu,
- Another on Princess Peach's Castle between Peach, Mario, Captain Falcon, and Ice Climbers,
- One on Brinstar between Samus, Pikachu, Fox, and Peach,
- One on Corneria between Fox, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Samus,
- One on Pokémon Stadium between Pikachu, Mario, Bowser, and Fox.
The screen then cuts to the title screen.
Section 1: Mario
The movie first opens up with Mario, detailing his taunt, special moves, ground attacks, and more. Mario notably demonstrates his Super Jump Punch in a fashion similar to a Luigi Ladder. Mario also throws a Green Shell into a bunch of Goombas and knocking off Bowser. at the end. This is a reference to the Mario series, as Koopa shells are frequently used as weapons for Mario. Also in reference to the Mario series, Mario is seen jumping and breaking a ? Block to release a Super Mushroom a la Super Mario Bros.
In one scene, Mario and his 5 alternate costumes are seen crouching, meaning that there were 6 Marios in a match at the same time, which is impossible in normal gameplay (without the debug menu).
Section 2: Peach
Peach's section opens by detailing her idle poses. The movie then goes over her special and ground attacks, notably being used mostly on Mario. There's a scene where Mario interrupts Bowser's grab on Peach, in reference to Mario's duty to save the princess in the Mario series. Peach is also seen using her float ability at several points of the section.

Section 4: Yoshi
Section 5: Trophy Display
Section 6: Link
Section 7: Zelda

- Oddly, Pikachu is the only character whose section in the Special Movie plays an unlockable song from an unlockable stage in their universe.
