In light of the recent vandalism

It seems creating spam/fake pages is a main method of attack by some vandals. We've seen it quite a lot, especially recently. And since our recent vandal has been constantly recreating those pages after creating more accounts one after another, I feel we need to combat this. One way that I could think of would be to restrict mainspace page creation to autoconfirmed and up, like some wikis are doing. Are there any other ideas? Feel free to discuss. Berrenta (talk) 16:38, 14 September 2014 (EDT)

I second this. I don't even know why we don't already do this. Air Conditioner AC.png ばか. 16:39, 14 September 2014 (EDT)
I'd support making mainspace page creation require autoconfirmation. Miles (talk) 16:40, 14 September 2014 (EDT)

I've posted on Porple montage's talk page about this. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Interspacial 16:41, 14 September 2014 (EDT)

Given the user's predictable behavior patterns, I would assume that a range block should prevent him from recurring. Anothrgamer1234 (talk) 19:22, 14 September 2014 (EDT)
A range block isn't possible, as tommy barnes's IPs are all different and not remotely the same. Even if we could issue a range block against him, he'll just come back again. Rtzxy Signature SmashBall.jpeg Smashing! 19:26, 14 September 2014 (EDT)

If there's any opposition to this, you should voice it now. Otherwise, I think we should put it into place for a month or two. Miles (talk) 17:22, 15 September 2014 (EDT)

The only opposition would be from tommy barnes. Do it. It'll help (to an extent, though). Rtzxy Signature SmashBall.jpeg Smashing! <
Do it, it will at least stall him out for a week, sad to see many potential editors locked out, but at this point.... it's gotten too out of hand, this guy clearly doesn't have anything better to do than vandalize the wiki..... Laikue (talk|contribs) 17:26, 15 September 2014 (EDT)
Support. I know MarioWiki does this. ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is bad for me 17:29, 15 September 2014 (EDT)
Support Yeah...I think everyone here has seen why it's necessary at this point. Scr7Scr7 sig.png(talk · contribs) 17:31, 15 September 2014 (EDT)

Yeah, I think it's time to put this into action if it is not already. I also think we should update our vandal policy, since recent changes is clogged to the brim with fruitless reverts Laikue (talk|contribs) 15:42, 22 September 2014 (EDT)

On this very page, I'm currently drafting an idea I have to combat this. I'll draft an actual policy if it gets enough support. Return of Air Conditioner AC.png Yuno best girl. 15:43, 22 September 2014 (EDT)

Okay, we better consider implementing the page creation restrictions I mentioned in the original post. With the potential traffic from the English release of Smash 4, as well as Tommy barnes returning, it is long overdue. Berrenta (talk) 15:00, 2 October 2014 (EDT)

I think that only some people should worry about Tommy Barnes. I haven't seen any of the things he's done (lucky me, I guess), but there are multiple people, myself included, who want this wiki to be as accurate as possible. And we can't really do that if everyone's ganging up on one guy. Granted, he has it coming; I'm not feeling sorry for the guy. But if everyone does one thing (and only one thing), then the other thing gets...too tedious to take care of. If people take care of the wiki, then Tommy Barnes has every opportunity to vandalize. If we take care of Tommy, then we end up frantically trying to catch up with information we missed. I say we split the burdens, 50-50. Aidan the Gamer 15:19, 2 October 2014 (EDT)

Maybe we could create some type of Anti-Vandalism task force or something. Or would the junior admins take care of things like that? Gpev96 (SHAZAM!) (talk) 08:59, 3 October 2014 (EDT)

Dodge Cancelling

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to technical moves in Smash, but this is a technique in Smash 3DS that has been getting some attention lately. Is it significant enough for it's own article or mentioning somewhere in the Wiki? Link Unknown the Hedgehog 11:11, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

Backround image

I know I am SUPER late for this, but a while ago there was conversation about changing the wiki's backround image. since then nothing is changed, but i've created my own wallpaper featuring all the series symbols on it. I was wondering if we could use it maybe? I haven't got an account, so how would i show you guys the wallpaper? 124.148.96.11 01:32, 25 October 2014 (EDT)

Wii U News

Since early copies are coming out, is the wiki going to be updated with new info? I know it's very scarce with who has new copies but I see myself mindlessly refreshing to see if any news is out. 67.231.167.113 20:59, 8 November 2014 (EST) BrittF

Question

I really enjoy the information that comes from this wiki, but I must beg to ask: Why does SmashWiki make such a huge emphasis on competitive play? Wouldn't that be better for some kind of side project?

Thank you for answering. Beatle (talk) 18:28, 23 November 2014 (EST)

That's a simple answer: Smash Bros. has a huge and dedicated tournament scene. Competitive play takes up a huge part of the Smash community, so it would be wrong to not put a huge emphasis on competitive play on this wiki. Rtzxy Reflect.jpg Reflect! 18:31, 23 November 2014 (EST)

Who's Tommy

Who's is this Tommy Barnes guy? Is he the leader of the vandals or something cause I'm noticing users mentioning this person. And again, I'm going to read the SW:TALK again just to make sure if this is violating this policy. (Smashworker101 (talk) 22:12, 28 November 2014 (EST))

Semi-protection of Smash 4 articles...

...Should be removed by now. It's been over three months since 3DS' release in Japan, nearly three months since its release in the States, and over a month since SmashU's release. There's no personal speculation nor unverified claims to worry about anymore on these articles. Now it's about gathering information from the games to flesh these articles out, reviewing the accuracy of the printed information, and editing the pages in general, which IP contribution helps more here than preventing it does. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 05:20, 31 December 2014 (EST)

I suggested here we do so on January 6th, the same day we'll remove the "recent release" template from everything. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Metroid 08:39, 31 December 2014 (EST)

Wiki glitch?

Recently, a user has uploaded an image through the mobile version. As I looked at the file, there's no tab for editing/viewing history. Instead, there's a Create tab, so the wiki software may not have caught that it exists. The image in question is Trophy Rush WiiU.jpeg. Berrenta (talk) 11:58, 11 January 2015 (EST)

Going to history manually with http://www.ssbwiki.com/index.php?title=File:Trophy_Rush_WiiU.jpeg&action=history says "There is no edit history for this page.". Kinda weird. Not sure what's up. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Chilled 12:01, 11 January 2015 (EST)

IP Welcome Template

Am I missing something, or do we not have a Welcome template adjusted for anon's anymore? The normal template seems moreso geared towards Registered Users... Shouldn't we have a account recomendation template or something? Just an idea, that's all. ScoreCounter 15:06, 8 April 2015 (EDT)

Anons who are contributing well should be encouraged to make an account. Miles (talk) 15:23, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
Which is my point. That's... not happening as much as it prehaps should. I'm saying if we put the convenience there, then people might do it more often. ScoreCounter 15:30, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
Wouldn't hurt to make a template like that, certainly. Feel free to throw a draft together. Miles (talk) 15:39, 8 April 2015 (EDT)

Well, under an L2 heading:

Greetings, Traveller!

First things first, welcome to our wiki, and thanks for all the contributions you've made so far! As it's clear you want to make a constructive effort to improve the wiki, why not Create an account? Whilst it may seem a pretty trivial thing, having an account benefits you in multiple ways:

  1. Identity. If you have a username, you become much more identifiable around the wiki, and it's much easier for people to identify you directly. Think of it as moving from being called "Hey, you!" to... well, whatever you want to be called! (But keep it clean!) Also, if you edit with multiple computers, say, at a library, it's much easier for anyone to tell who is editing.
  2. Anonymity. Okay, that one seems odd, but there's a lot that can be found out from someone's IP address!
  3. A User Page. You get a page all to yourself where (if you want) you can tell everyone whatever you want about yourself, like what characters you use a lot (or "Main" if you want to be technical), and other little things.
  4. New Features. Even creating an account gives you some new tools, such as the move tool. You also get a watchlist, so you can keep an eye on any edits made to the pages you care about!
  5. Personalisation. Don't like the way the Wiki looks? Or does the time zone seem a little bit off? Well, by creating an account, you can customise the way the Wiki works for you.

There's some other things, like being able to apply for Rollback, but, for now, why not jump in! Creating an account is free, and there's no strings attached - you can stop editing whenever you want. (But why would you want to do that?)

I'm looking forward to seeing you with an account!

~~~~
How about that? I've tried to find a middle ground between the Welcome template and the "Why create an account" page. ScoreCounter 16:10, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
Not a bad start, although I might tweak a few things. I'll try to get around to a more final version in the near future. Miles (talk) 16:35, 8 April 2015 (EDT)
How often are the featured articles swapped? It's been Knockback for a while. (I'm relatively new here, though I know MarioWiki swaps featured articles once every Saturday.) Andymii (talk) 20:26, 13 April 2015 (EDT)
Icons
Just soooo many smash logos. Just look at it [1] . To be honest, it makes sense why we use smash icons, this wiki is ABOUT smash, but I have some ideas for alt. icons. For delete, use a Subspace Bomb, and speedy delete, use a detonated Subspace bomb. For protection, make it look more like shield. It's so close it gets on my nerves. Just my two cents (is that the proper term?). What do you think. 76.168.47.247 19:36, 11 May 2015 (EDT)
