Character customization
Character customization, officially character creation (キャラ作り, character creation), referred to as Custom Move Sets (カスタマイズ必殺ワザ, Customize Special Techniques) in the Smash Direct, is a feature in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4. It appears to allow players to alter several fundamental properties of characters' special moves. All characters have 1 standard and 2 variations of each special move to choose from, with the exception of Palutena and the Mii Fighters, who instead have a selection of completely different specials.
Before the Super Smash Bros. Direct where the feature was officially announced, in June 2013, Masahiro Sakurai had stated that players will be able to customize characters in the 3DS game and transfer those customizations to the Wii U game. He had also stated that the customizations will not be alternate costumes (though this was later proven not to be the case for Mii Fighters), and that they would not have to be unlocked through repeated tasks.[1]
Character customization will be available when playing locally or when playing online with friends, but not when playing online with anyone.
General
The options for customizing movesets appear in the form of "Custom parts", which come in multiple types[2]:
- Equipment: Collected through the games' numerous game modes, these items can be equipped to characters as to boost three potential stats: speed, attack, and defense. Some of these items may be identical in appearance in menus, but offer different stat boosts. They do not affect the appearance of fighters in-game. Equipment appears to correlate with items that each fighter is known for; for example, Mario uses gloves, shoes, and overalls. Currently, only a few pieces of equipment are known:
- Max-Power Gloves: Boost attack power, and according to the name, are assumed to be the most powerful power-increasing item.
- High-Power Gloves: Boost attack power by a lot, but still lose to the above item.
- Air Pinata Gloves
- High-Speed Dash Shoes: Boost walking/running speed.
- Ultra-Lightweight Shoes: Same as above, but difference in stat boost is currently unknown.
- Easy Split-Second Shield Overalls: Increases defense, making characters who equip it harder to launch and lowers the damage they take.
- Rare Agility Badge
- Hard Breaker Agility Badge
- Quick Batter Protection Badge
- Unknown equipment with negative (red) effect of removing respawn invincibility.
- Unknown equipment with effect of increasing attack in a crisis.
- Specials: Lets players change the special attacks of various characters. Details are shown in a later section.
- Headgear: Head accessories for Miis that behave similar to outfits. The available headgear shown so far are:
- A top hat.
- A hibiscus barrette.
- A sun hat.
- A helmet from Mii Force.
- Samus's helmet
- Meta Knight's mask
- Mario's Hat
- A Slippy Toad based Hat
- Peach's hair, earrings, and crown
- An American football helmet.
- Outfits: Can be used to customize the outfits and accessories of Mii Fighters. It is currently unknown how they will be unlocked, or whether the user can change the colors of these outfits. However, it has been shown that certain outfits will alter the appearance of a Mii's weapons, depending on its type (such as a leather bodysuit changing a Swordfighter's sword into a beam sword, or a tuxedo giving a Gunner's arm-cannon a smaller, sleeker appearance). The available outfits shown so far are:
- Standard Outfit: The default clothing worn by Miis.
- A suit and tie.
- An American football outfit.
- A leather bodysuit with glowing accents on it, (including one that resembles the Smash logo).
- An Old-English style outfit.
- A bulky armor suit that also has glowing accents on it.
- A tight shirt and black leather pants covered in bling.
- A cowboy costume. There is a female variant of this that includes a skirt.
- Fighter Uniform: An outfit resembling a martial arts uniform.
- Powers: Assorted powers implied to only take effect in Smash Run. A similar system was earlier used in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Most if not all powers have multiple levels; higher levels grant a greater number and\or more effective uses, but add more weight, with a weight limit of 25 [3]:

Confirmed variations of special moves
Mario
- Mario's Fire Orb is one of the variations of Fireball which is large with a swirly appearance. It moves significantly slower and hits multiple times.
- Mario's Fast Fireball is the second variation of Fireball which travels fast and straight. When demonstrated it was also shown to flinch but cause no knockback.
- Mario's Super Jump Punch can be turned into Explosive Punch, which produces fire and explosive damage.
- Mario's Super Jump is the second variation of Super Jump Punch. Nothing was confirmed about how it works yet. The only known difference is that it leaves a trail behind Mario.
- Mario has a move called Gust Cape that can replace Cape. No information, however, has been given about this.
- Mario has a move called Shocking Cape that can replace Cape. Nothing is known yet about this move yet.
- Mario's F.L.U.D.D. has two variations known as Scalding F.L.U.D.D. and High-Pressure F.L.U.D.D. that were briefly shown in the 2014 E3 Press Conference for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Scalding F.L.U.D.D. seems to deal fire rapid fire damage and keep them in place.

- Bowser's Fire Breath can be turned into a large fireball with start up lag. It also seems to go through enemies.
Rosalina
- Gravitational Pull can be replaced with Catch & Release or Guardian Luma. Catch and Release is performed in a similar manner to Gravitational Pull, except fighters are drawn in instead of items, while Guardian Luma has the active Luma act as a shield.
Donkey Kong
- Donkey Kong's Giant Punch has a variation called Storm Punch, which creates a large gust of wind.
- Donkey Kong's Hand Slap has a variation that has him deal electrical damage. Has only been shown in mid-air and the name is unknown.
- Donkey Kong's Spinning Kong has two variations, Giant Slam and Giant Blow. Nothing has been confirmed about how either of them work yet.
- Donkey Kong's Headbutt can be given knockback resistance and significantly slowed down.

- Yoshi has a variant named "Heavy Egg Roll", though no other information is currently known.

- Link's Gale Boomerang can be changed to an Electric Boomerang. No other information is known.

- Samus is confirmed to have a melee variant of her Charge Shot, though nothing was confirmed about how it works yet.
Zero Suit Samus
Kirby
- Kirby's Inhale can be turned into an ice breath attack, presumably disabling Kirby's ability to copy opponents. The other variation is 'Jump Inhale', where Kirby hops forward before he inhales the opponent.
- Kirby's Hammer Flip can be replaced by 'Launching Hammer', of which its mechanics are unknown, but assumed to be the original variant from Melee/Brawl. It may also be replaced with 'Giant Hammer', appearing like how Kirby wields the hammer in his home series - an overhead swing.
- Kirby's Final Cutter may be replaced by 'Ground Wave', or 'Rising Cutter'. Mechanics are unknown, but Ground Wave does not appear to give Kirby a recovery.
- Kirby's Stone can be replaced by 'Burying Stone', which buries grounded foes it hits, and 'Meteor Stone', whose mechanics are unknown. It is unknown what the previously reported 'Hammer Bash' is, or whether it is even a custom down special.
Meta Knight
- Drill Rush has two variants: "Speed Drill" and "Breaker Drill". Speed Drill has a longer range but can only travel the direction Meta Knight is facing; while Breaker Drill has moderate range and power, yet it can break shields.
King Dedede

- Fox has a variation named Charge Blaster. Nothing was confirmed about how it works yet.
Pikachu
- Thunder can be substituted for Self-Generation or Great Thunder. Self-Generation unleashes an electric attack from Pikachu to knock back foes, while Great Thunder has an extended reach, as well as a sweetspot where it begins and a sourspot where it ends.

- Greninja has a variation named Stagnant Shuriken. How it works is not known at this time.

- Marth's Shield Breaker can be altered to propel him forwards a significant distance on use.

- Palutena's Arrow has two variations: one where the arrows move slower and with more control, though less damage will be inflicted, while another disables the ability to control shots, but allows shots to pierce through opponents.

- Straight Lunge can be changed to a flaming or shock variant. The flaming variant has less charge time but less damage, while the shocking variant paralyzes opponents, but Little Mac loses knockback resistance.

- Sun Salutation has two variations: one where shots are slower but can push opponents, while another is a concentrated version.

- Rush Coil may be replaced with Beat. How Beat operates is not known at this time.
- Leaf Shield can be replaced with Plant Barrier from Mega Man 6. How it differs from Leaf Shield aside from appearance is not known at this time.
Pac-Man
- Pac-Man's down special, which summons a fire hydrant that sprays water on both sides, has two variations: one where the hydrant shoots fire instead, dealing damage to anyone including the user, and another where the hydrant explodes when dropped or after some time.
Trivia
- Taking the first letter of each category of custom part available to Miis (Equipment, Specials, Headgear, Outfit, Powers) yields the word "eShop".
