Super Smash Bros. Ultimate winners Bright

Thunder Summit 1 was an Arizona Super Smash Bros. Ultimate invitational tournament held in the campus at Grand Canyon University. It featured 16 players all of which were students attending GGU. Twelve players were invited to the event through their performance at GCU’s weekly tournament, Fire Fox Fridays. One additional player would qualify for the event through their performance at Fire Fox Fridays #69. Three final players would be determined through an in-person voting process.

Tournament Layout

The event was run entirely out of an apartment building on GCU campus. The first apartment suite was used as a stream room, with couch commentary located next to the stream desk. The first bedroom of the apartment acted as the room where the players would play on stream. The second apartment suite was used as a room for players to play in side brackets, friendlies, and watch bracket matches on stream during downtime.

Tournament Stages

Similar to Smash Ultimate Summit, the bracket was organized into three separate stages. Four round robin pools would seed players into a single elimination gauntlet stage. The 1st place player from each pool was moved through the gauntlet into the winners bracket. The winner of each gauntlet would also be placed in the upper bracket, while the two losers of each would start their tournament run in the lower bracket.

Trivia

  • Due to an error in the bracket on Start.gg, after the gauntlet stage Penguin01 and Zorro had to play under each other’s gamertags to play their proper opponents.
    • The entire gauntlet stage had to be removed from Start.gg due to errors in the brackets seeding and progression settings.
    • Both players ended up placing in the exact same position at 7th.
  • The original prize pool was to be $250 but after numerous donations and boosted votes, the prize pool quickly shot up to $1,000.
  • Viewership for this event peaked at 72 concurrent viewers during Grand Finals.
  • The Squad Strike bracket was never played, much to the disappointment of Penguin01.
