Sandbag (サンドバッグくん, Sandbag-kun) is a character from the Stadium game Home-Run Contest in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It also appears as an item during matches in Brawl, SSB4, and Ultimate.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
In Home-Run Contest
Sandbag made its debut in Melee, alongside the new Home-Run Contest event. In the mode, players are given ten seconds to hit Sandbag as far as possible using a Home-Run Bat. Sandbag is given a visible damage percentage in this mode, as to allow players to estimate how far it will travel when hit by the Home-Run Bat.
Sandbag is considered a character, allowing the game to record its damage percentage and allowing players to grab it. Sandbag can also be controlled by a human player through the use of the debug menu. However, a majority of its moveset is not programmed, as it is not intended to move or otherwise act as a standard combatant. As a result, attempting to attack, midair jump, or shield with it will cause the game to freeze. In addition, Sandbag cannot be KOed, even after passing the blast lines, and it can eventually crash the game if it falls too far beyond them, as the game will eventually be unable to calculate its position on the screen. As Sandbag lacks animations for moving and jumping, it uses its idle stance for such movements.
Trophy description
The Sandbag trophy is obtained by completing the Home-Run Contest with every character.
Sandbag
Sandbag exists for one reason only: to get smashed in the Home-Run Contest. Pound on Sandbag as much as possible in the time allotted, then swing for the fences as you compete for the longest home run of all time. Getting hit doesn't hurt Sandbag at all. As a matter of fact, it loves to see players wind up and let loose.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In Home-Run Contest
In Brawl, Sandbag reprises its role in the Home-Run Contest. However, Sandbag is lighter and it also slides further after landing from a hit. Between games, Sandbag also became an item instead of a character, and therefore, it can no longer be grabbed or thrown. Its programming, however, contains unused subactions for character-based situations, such as the event of being grabbed, suggesting that it may have formerly been intended to remain as a character.
Like in Melee, Sandbag's trophy is unlocked by getting a distance with all characters in the Home-Run Contest. Note that characters who may be switched during matches, namely Zelda and Sheik, Samus and Zero Suit Samus, and the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, do not need to be repeatedly used in order to attain the trophy.
As an item
As well as its appearance in the Home-Run Contest, Sandbag can appear as an item during matches. Sandbag is a unique item in that while it can release items upon being hit, like the crate and capsule, it cannot actually be picked up and thrown. It can, however, be swallowed by Kirby, King Dedede, and Wario, as well as Munchlax.
As players have a degree of modification over what Sandbag can drop via the Item Switch, Sandbag is also of particular interest to use in CD Factories, a type of custom stage made using Brawl's Stage Builder.
On the Online Practice Stage
Sandbag appears on the Online Practice Stage, and players are given the option to practice combos or otherwise attack it while waiting for Wi-Fi matches to start. Sandbag's damage percent cannot be seen, though it does take more and more knockback the more it is hit. If sent below the bottom blast line, Sandbag will respawn in the center of the stage; this does not occur if Sandbag passes the upper blast line.

Sandbag
An item that appears in the Home-Run Contest, where the goal is to do lots of damage to Sandbag, then send it flying as far as you can. It also appears in the regular game. If you smash it, a storm of confetti and items will burst out. Sandbag doesn't feel pain, though; in fact, it's happy to be of service.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Sandbag reprises its role in the Home-Run Contest and the Online Practice Stage. It also makes a cameo in Little Mac's reveal trailer as his punching bag.

As an item
Sandbag returns as an item, acting identical in function to its Brawl incarnation. It no longer drops CDs.
Trophy description
Sandbag
- This little guy is great for getting in some practice against. In Home-Run Contest you'll send it flying, and in normal battles it has a habit of dropping items when you lay into it. Sandbag seems pretty content with being your punching bag, so it'd almost be mean not to go all out on it.
- This little guy is pretty good to practise with! In the Home-Run Contest, the goal is to attack Sandbag and then whack him as hard as you can to send him flying! He even appears in normal matches, where you can hit him to get lots of food and items. Don't worry, though - he loves to help out. It doesn't even hurt him at all!

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Sandbag returns in Ultimate as an item. Sandbag also appears as a Spirit. As a humorous aesthetic, Sandbag now shows visible happiness if left alone for a period of time or when it is grabbed. Sandbag can be grabbed and thrown, much like in Melee (unless it's in the Home-Run Contest).
Sandbag also appears when testing a Spirit Team or a Mii Fighter, or a controller configuration in the Options menu. While Sandbag no longer appears as the primary opponent in the Online Practice Stage, it can randomly appear as an item instead.
With the return of Home-Run Contest in version 5.0.0, Sandbag once again reprises its role. Sandbag has infinite launch resistance for the first hit that connects with it, and now blushes when at high damage.
