Phoenix Wright's Court Record while in Turnabout Mode, with the gauge slightly depleted.

Turnabout Mode is Phoenix Wright's fighter ability in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Collecting evidence with his down special, Investigate, fills up his Court Record, and upon getting 3 pieces of good evidence, he can use his neutral special, Objection! to gain increased attack power, movement speed, and a few new moves.

OverviewEdit

Phoenix's Court Record is a collection of three folders visible above his portrait at all times, and also appears above his head for approximately 2 seconds upon using Investigate. It is used for keeping track of what evidence Phoenix is currently holding, and what pieces are good or bad. In addition, there is a small icon next to the Court Record above his portrait that signifies what mode he is currently in. While he is in Courtroom Mode, his default state, the icon is a picture of an attorney's badge. During Turnabout Mode, the icon changes to a picture of Phoenix's hand pointing forward, and a light blue bar underneath the three folders begins ticking down.

EvidenceEdit

Phoenix's Court Record in two different states, one with two pieces of bad evidence in the first and third slots, and one with three pieces of good evidence.

Phoenix can pull several pieces of evidence using his down special, and collecting these pieces is the only way for him to enter Turnabout Mode. There are six pieces of good evidence, and six pieces of bad evidence. Bad evidence is distinguished by not lighting up the folder it currently occupies, and serves no use other than to waste a slot and necessitate throwing it away.

Once Phoenix has obtained three pieces of good evidence, landing Objection! against an opponent will cause him to pose confidently and shout "I've got all I need!", putting him into Turnabout Mode. Turnabout Mode lasts for approximately 30 seconds, and while it is active a bar on Phoenix's Court Record will begin to tick down, and a blue aura will surround Phoenix the entire time.

Good Evidence Bad Evidence
Cell phone Glasses
Photograph Bonsai tree
Watch Juice bottle
Knife Plunger
Flower vase Steel Samurai statue
Autopsy report Servbot doll

Upon exiting Turnabout Mode, Phoenix will lose all three pieces of evidence he has gathered, and must gather them again to re-enter the mode. If Phoenix uses his Final Smash, Ace Attorney, while in Turnabout Mode, Turnabout Mode will immediately end upon conclusion of the move, regardless of how much time he would have otherwise had left.

Move changesEdit

While Phoenix is in Turnabout Mode, certain moves change entirely. His Down tilt, Down aerial, and Up tilt all change to be Phoenix pointing forward with conviction as a giant glowing blue hand extends forward out of his arm. These moves gain an immense increase in range and damage as a result.

His Forward smash and Forward tilt also change via simply gaining more hits. His forward smash hits 6 times instead of 3 in Turnabout Mode, and his forward tilt hits 20 times (at a decreased rate of damage) instead of 2.

M-Maya?! changes as well when Maya is summoned with the attack button, turning into Steel Samurai Maya Smelting!. Instead of simply running forward and tripping, Maya will instead begin to swing her arms around in a windmill motion, dealing damage and carrying the opponent forward before tripping and falling near the end.

Instructional quotesEdit

Move List   Using his down special, Phoenix can search for evidence to help his case. There are 6 pieces of good evidence and 6 pieces of bad evidence. When Phoenix is holding 3 pieces of good evidence, he can use his neutral special to transition into Turnabout Mode, where he enjoys a boost to his attack speed and damage! Be warned, though, Turnabout Mode only lasts for a short time. Turn the tables on your opponent before they find a hole in your argument!

OriginEdit

Turnabout Mode is essentially a fighting game representation of Phoenix's uncanny ability to turn cases that seem hopeless for him around in an instant. Via a mixture of his own intelligence, bluffing, and sometimes assistance from other members of the court, Phoenix has found his way through seemingly unwinnable cases, turning things in his favor with usually just a single argument. Phoenix is so notable for this, in fact, that in his home series some people have given him the moniker "The Turnabout Terror".

TriviaEdit

  • If Phoenix tries to use Investigate while in Turnabout Mode, he will instead use Present Evidence, to prevent the player from gaining or discarding any evidence prematurely.
