GENESIS 2 theft incidentEdit
At GENESIS 2, a supermajor hosted by DBR, an envelope containing $6,000 of sponsorship money for the prize pot was left in DBR's hotel suite. When Zelgadis was alone in the hotel room with a friend named Clayton, who wasn't a member of DBR, he would attempt to steal the envelope and leave the premises, taking the envelope back to Clayton's house. After no member of DBR could find the envelope, they confronted Zelgadis about it when he returned to GENESIS 2's venue, and while he initially tried to lie about taking the envelope over the course of several hours, he would confess to taking the envelope after police got involved and Zelgadis was informed he could face felony charges.[1] Escorted by police, he would retrieve the envelope from Clayton's house and return it to DBR, after which he was made to leave the tournament's venue. Though Zelgadis did not face any formal ban for this action, nor did DBR press any charges, he was kicked out of DBR, and with the stained reputation, his tournament activity dwindled; he never attended a major tournament again.
In 2015, Zelgadis would re-emerge, where he spoke publicly for the first time about the incident in a lengthy post on SmashBoards.[2] In the post, Zelgadis claimed he found the envelope sprawled on the floor and initially took it to bring it to the tournament, but along the way, he and Clayton got sidetracked, with them going back to Clayton's house. On the way to Clayton's house, he alleges Clayton suggested they take the money, and he went along with it due to financial difficulties he was having at the time, with them taking $200 out of the envelope and Clayton taking the envelope to stash in his house. Zelgadis further claimed he wanted to return the money when first pressed, but couldn't find Clayton when they returned to the venue, and thought he was in too deep already to salvage the situation. Zelgadis would additionally deny accusations of him being addicted to hard drugs at the time, and closed out the post with a public apology to various members of DBR, though the post was also juxtaposed with various accusations throughout of being mistreated by DBR leading up to the incident, particularly by Boback, who he claimed lied to the police by telling them Zelgadis was not in the hotel room with the rest of DBR the night before GENESIS. The post was met with a mixed reception by the community, with a general sentiment that a second chance after several years was deserved, but people also criticized the post for sympathy baiting and Zelgadis partially blaming DBR for his actions with the aforementioned mistreatment accusations.[3][4] No member of DBR would publicly respond to Zelgadis, and no private reconciliation with Zelgadis is known to have occurred; meanwhile, Zelgadis would continue to compete locally at Wisconsin tournaments through 2016, after which he would disappear from the competitive Smash scene.
