Toad is a major character from the Mario series. He is Princess Peach's loyal retainer, and usually acts as someone who needs to be rescued, or provides Mario with hints or items to help him on his adventures.
He has made many appearences in the mainstream mario games varying from as an npc who provides assistance, to a playable hero as shown in Wario Woods where he defeats Wario to save the woods from being taken over by the evil antagonist. However lately Toadsworth has been taking over many of his previous roles for providing help in the main mario games while Toad becomes playable in the various mario spinoff games such as Mario Kart.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
In Game
In the game Toad is used as Peach's Neutral B move which if done correctly can counter an enemy's attack. Toad is also seen in the background of the first level of Adventure Mode running behind the arena with the Yoshis and again behind the finish line.
Toad Rumor
It has been rumored that Toad could be unlocked if a player was to hit all the credits after clearing Classic Mode, Adventure Mode, or All-Star Mode. This rumor was sadly proven false but many fake screenshots were made to trick players into thinking he was real. The Toad used in the screenshot was the one in Mushroom Kingdom Adventure and in Peach's B button attack.

"Toad, Peach's longtime servant, first showed off his strength in Super Mario Bros. 2, then proved to be an agile driver in Super Mario Kart. There are many Toads in Peach's castle and across the Mushroom Kingdom, and although they look similar, they have varied natures. Not the best of guards, Toad must often be rescued."

In the game, Toad is once again Peach's neutral B button move, and is still not a playable character. It was rumored that he was unlockable, but this rumor was proved false.
Trophy Description
One of the servants at Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom. Toads give off a strong sense of peace. Most feature white heads with red polka dots, but there are other colors as well. Toad's incredible uprooting speed in Super Mario Bros. 2 is unrivaled, adding to the rumor of his superhuman strength...however out of place it might seem.

- Out of the Mario Big Eight characters (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario and Bowser) Toad is the only one of the group to not be playable in the Smash bros series as of yet.
- According to the official Melee poll Toad was 4th most wanted character (with 27 votes) from the Mario series to be in melee right after Bowser (169 votes), Princess Peach (66 votes) and Wario (65 votes). Coincidentally with the confirmation of Wario in Brawl, the previous 3 are in smash possibly making an unconfirmed hint that Toad might become playable in the next smash bros game.
