SmashArena.png

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, editors and users, to the Smash Arena! Each week (or two weeks, if the wiki's status is high Green or above) this forum hosts a tussle between two characters, items, stages or anything else from the Super Smash Bros. series! The winner gets, well, nothing. It's more of a poll but functionally, this is a popularity contest. You may vote for your favorite or who you think would win in a competition between the two combatants that round. No, you don't have to vote for the character with strength & power, or the stage considered more "fair", or the combatant with the most fans - just vote if you are a total fanboy of the participant. So what are you waiting for? Get voting!

The Rules

  1. When voting, you can give a brief comment on why you voted the way you did, or you can just leave your signature. Long explanations for your vote are discouraged, as they are unnecessary (a vote is worth the same regardless of its reasoning), and they inflate the size of an already large page.
  2. You can vote only once. Any multiple votes will be removed.
  3. Put a # before your vote to facilitate the vote counting.
  4. Type ~~~~ after your vote to sign it, whether you are logged in or not. Using the wrong number of "~"s counts as not signing - your signature must have both your signature itself and the time.
  5. There is a line in each section consisting of "DO NOT ADD COMMENTS OR EDIT ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE". You are to follow this rule; do not just type your vote at the bottom of the editing window. Not following this rule results in your vote being displayed in the wrong place.
  6. Put your vote below other votes; that is, so the votes are in chronological order.
  7. You may change or remove your vote at any time. To do this you must remove your old vote in its entirety; this is an exception to the "never remove comments" rule.
  8. You may vote only in the current fight; all previous fights are closed.
  9. Do not leave a space between your comment and the ones above it (and/or below it). Extra spacing results in the list numbers becoming disjointed.
  10. While previewing an edit of a single section, you will see loose formatting marks (such as a trailing |}). Do not alter or delete them; they are important to the page's construction and take effect only when the entire round is viewed.
  11. If there are multiple fights in a single round, try to make all your votes in a single edit.
  12. Any comments about the fight should be left in the comments section. The following kinds of comments are not allowed:
    • Comments relating to how close or one-sided a matchup is.
    • Comments about other users' opinions. You can point out that a user may have gotten a fact wrong, but you can't say things such as "That's not a good reason" or "But the other guy is better because X". Users can vote for any reason they want; trying to argue with someone's opinion generally has no positive outcome, in addition to simply inflating the comments section of an already large page.
      • Similarly, avoid writing votes that may invite an argument. Stating your opinion is fine, but don't make it easy for others to see it as goading.

If your vote is not added correctly - specifically, it breaks rules 3, 4, or 5 - you have a short amount of time to fix it (typically between fifteen minutes to an hour). After this time, it may be corrected and moved by any user to the Half-Votes section (adding the unsigned template if necessary), and it will count as half a vote. Other users should not fix such broken votes without also making them half-votes. Your vote will also be considered a half-vote if your edit causes someone else's valid vote to break one of these rules. Attempting to move your vote out of the Half-Votes section may result in it being worth zero (and subsequently deleted) at an operator's discretion.

Multiple votes in a round are not allowed; attempts to circumvent this with sockpuppets will result in all your votes being deleted, and is a blockable offense. Probated users who attempt to circumvent their probation with sockpuppets are also committing a blockable offense and will have their vote discounted. Remember that admins have access to CheckUser to check the IPs of any user, and will use it when sockpuppetry is suspected.

Intentional half-votes undermine the intent of the half-vote system as a way to punish voters for voting incorrectly. It is legal to want a vote to be worth half, but it is very heavily discouraged, and you must state in your vote you want it to be worth half. If you put your vote in the half-votes section without stating reasons why you want it there, it is worth zero and may be deleted by any user. You may replace it later should you do it correctly.

Above all, remember that voting in the Smash Arena is a privilege, not a right. In the vein of what SmashWiki is not, you are expected to at least attempt reasonable contributions to the wiki if you wish to retain your privilege to participate.

Round 233: Negative Zone vs. Peach Blossom

Winner!!
undecided

~ to ~
Rather than direct damage, these two Final Smashes focus on status shenanigans. Which overwhelms the other?

Votes for Negative Zone

  2. Man, this trophy is just plain weird. :/ Dots (talk)   The Heavy Weapons Guy 12:12, 10 January 2015 (EST)
  3. Negative Zone is the best. Smashworker101 (talk) 12:23, 10 January 2015 (EST)
  4. Lol, I don't like Peach! MeatBall104; The Bikini Inspector! >:D 12:30, 10 January 2015 (EST)
  5. Now what can beat the best Final Smash in the series? Laikue (talk | contribs) 15:00, 10 January 2015 (EST)
  6. This is pretty great. Imagine being able to do this in everyday life, like when you're stuck in a line, trapped in a crowd, trying to kidnap someone, or being kidnapped yourself. Also, this section was at the top. Littlesquirtle! I choose you!  19:08, 10 January 2015 (EST)
  7. Luigi Power 4ever. (Psychninja14 (talk) 11:55, 11 January 2015 (EST))
  8. In my opinion this is just a one-sided battle. This one is more affective, despite the fact that it has a set range, this one affects people even in mid-air, whereas Peach's Blossoms are relatively easy to avoid, and if you do avoid it (which any experienced smash player will) then you can steal her peaches. 72.105.76.48 13:22, 11 January 2015 (EST)
  9. Negative Zone! Negative Zone! Igor the Mii (talk) 16:39, 11 January 2015 (EST)
  10. Peach Blossom sucks. AW402 (talk) 17:22, 11 January 2015 (EST)
  11. Negative Zone can actually change the course of the game. Definitely one of the better Final Smashes. What can Peach Blossom do? Put you to sleep. Nuff said.  BlueStreak Speeds By 23:09, 11 January 2015 (EST)
  12. I find the metaphor of Negative Zone to be quite interesting. Luigi has forever lived in the shadow of his brother, Mario, putting him in a depressed state. Mario has been featured in countless eponymous games while Luigi has had few, if any. I see Negative Zone as a physical manifestation of Luigi's sadness. Because Luigi's sadness is so vast and expansive, his Final Smash actually imposes his own pain and misery unto his opponents, for no one would willingly desire to suffer the effects of Negative Zone. The physical damage that the Final Smash deals to competitors is similar to the emotional horrors that plague Luigi every day of his miserable, wretched "life". He is so constantly overflowing with pain and depression that his negative feelings and emotions spill over onto his opponents upon successfully trapping them in Negative Zone. All that Peach's Peach Blossom does is grow some fruit and bore her opponents to sleep. Everyman Or Nobody? (talk) 23:25, 12 January 2015 (EST)
  13. Weegee! Weegee! Weegee! UltraSmasher402 (talk) 22:22, 13 January 2015 (EST)
  14. This explains Luigi's hatred of being Player 2 a lot more. Also I think this has more good effects than Peach Blossom. --EpiNa8 23:08, 13 January 2015 (EST)

Geez, Everyman or Nobody, that's deep. Surprising people can make something that in-depth about a collection of pixels, but won't do it in real life. I love the way the world works. Littlesquirtle! I choose you!  19:27, 13 January 2015 (EST)

Round 232: Onett vs. Fourside

Winner!!
Fourside

23 to 24
These two masses of buildings are of significantly different population density - and altitude of fighting. One's based on horizontal sections and runaway drivers, the other on vertical shafts and runaway UFOs. Which capitalizes?

Votes for Onett

  1. I prefer Onett, mainly because I've never played Fourside. I actually like Magicant best though. XD 72.105.74.179 10:20, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  2. Onett is better because Onett. Rtzxy   Reflect! 10:26, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  3. After almost a 6 month hiatus, we finally get to vote again in a new round on Smash Arena. I can't wait for the three way smash games round because I would love to hear everyone's opinions on the three games (although Melee might win over Brawl this time though. :P). Anyways, I vote for Onett because Pollyanna is my favorite music in the EarthBound franchise. The music and the stage itself reminds me of my life back in California. 14. I like the music. (In EB, that is.) Plus it's the first stage in the series, and I just like the location. Darrman (talk) 13:30, 24 December 2014 (EST)
  15. I like it for having no lower blast line at all. After all the matches I viewed in the past, it's not like anyone needs a lower blast line for KOs. 67.166.228.195 19:52, 29 December 2014 (EST)
  16. I perfer Onett since its the most common returning stage plus I like the stage hazards on it, makes it useful to bari someone then let the cars bump into them. (Smashworker101 (talk) 18:57, 1 January 2015 (EST))

  8. I vote for Onett, because I actually like how you are forced to stick to the buildings & trees to avoid the cars. Plus, it has a more fun atmosphere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.68.4.20 (talkcontribs) 18:28, 4 January 2015 (EST)

Votes for Fourside

  1. I feel that the cars of Onett force players to avoid/utilize its ground area excessively, changing normal gameplay mechanics. I still like both stages, though; I merely prefer Fourside. Everyman Or Nobody? (talk) 00:40, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  2. It hasn't refused to go away. RickTommy 02:13, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  3. It has a better aesthetic design, as well as being overall less campy(though not by much). I wish it would make a return.71.108.116.197 03:10, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  4. This stage doesn't have walk-offs. Awesomelink234 PK FLASHBOMB! 08:06, 13 December 2014 (EST)

  7. I prefer stages that aren't walk-off. FirstaLasto 21:33, 13 December 2014 (EST)
  8. I personally find Onett to be a rather annoying stage due to the cars, and the overall cramped space. I don't have much to say about Fourside, but I do find it better. MeatBall104; Going :|O around the clock! 12:28, 14 December 2014 (EST)
  9. I've never really liked any of the EarthBound stages in the Smash series (with the exception of this one). In all honesty, however, I'd choose Fourside over the others in an instant.  BlueStreak Speeds By 12:57, 14 December 2014 (EST)
  10. I was going to say exactly what FaLo said o3o DoctorPain99 19:19, 14 December 2014 (EST)
  11. Onett is a frustrating, campy, cramped stage that was never fun for me to play on, even back in my younger days. Fourside has a pretty interesting geometry and isn't a walk-off. I don't get why Onett keeps getting brought back. --Timson622222 (talk) 19:21, 14 December 2014 (EST)
  12. Fourside is a lot more fun to play on, and the scenery is slightly more pleasing. Onett can be annoying at times, especially when you're trying to maintain your ground in between the houses. There are also those overhangs actually being able to block jumps in Brawl, which makes escaping infinite jabs and chain throws just about impossible. Blue Ninjakoopa 05:45, 15 December 2014 (EST)
  13. Onett is way too cramped. Not very suitable for battle. This is probably the best Earthbound stage in my opinion, excluding Magicant. SmashBros (talk) 10:55, 15 December 2014 (EST)
  14. Bigger, no hazards, better for competitive play (which Melee was focused on a little), and just better overall. Derpguy 64 (talk) 12:16, 15 December 2014 (EST)Derpguy 64
  15. I can pronounce its name. --Meester Tweester (talk) 04:53, 17 December 2014 (EST)
  16. This stage should've been in Brawl and SSB4. Smash Master 08:04, 17 December 2014 (EST)
  17. I never really liked Onett for the sheer fact of it being brought back two too many times than I cared for, and the stage was pretty lackluster, with the cars being the only thing that saves it from being forgotten for me. Fourside, however was a stage that, despite its size, was fun to play on no matter when. Except for that event, Space travelers. AtomicGameAndWatch (talk) 17:36, 17 December 2014 (EST)
  18. I like Fourside, and I would have liked to see it as a familiar stage in Brawl. Mainly because it has so many camping spots. >:D The Arnge   I'm no rubble monkey! 13:41, 18 December 2014 (EST)

  1. Fourside is a cool stage, Onett is a really fun stage. Both are very frustrating for different reasons. Onett has walk-off KOs and powerful stage hazards, as well as a layout that can lead to Up-Smash/tilt camping. Fourside has narrow holes (making it especially frustrating for its sole character; Ness), a spaceship platform that's obviously been waxed, and a layout and length that promotes all types of camping. For their good traits, there are many. Onett for example, has a good lay-out for 6-8 player smashes (one of the best in the game imo), good music, and just a fun atmosphere. But, I'm voting for Fourside because it has BETTER music, a real cool atmosphere (think Saphron City, but larger, more realistic and at night with aliens), would've been a great 8-player smash stage, and it has aliens, dammit! How cool is that? However, considering all things, I can only bring myself to give Fourside a half vote, as Onett gets a very close second in my book.
