The Wombo Combo refers to both a famous combo and video from the competitive Smash community. Stemming from a match in Melee featuring commentary by HomeMade Waffles, Phil, and Mango in response to an impromptu combo started by Silent Spectre and Tang against Zhu, the video later became an internet phenomenon.
Origin
The Wombo Combo was performed during the semifinal round of the losers' bracket the SCSA West Coast Circuit tournament on 6 December 2008. The ultimately deciding set of the round took place on Battlefield, with Silent Spectre (as Captain Falcon) and Tang (as Fox) fighting against Lucky and Zhu (both as Fox) in doubles.
Near the end of the match, Lucky was KOed and thus, Silent Spectre and Tang had a significant advantage in terms of stock; Zhu had only one stock left, while both Silent Spectre and Tang held two apiece. Despite this numerical advantage, Zhu was considered one of the best Falco mains in all of the United States, with his combo prowess with the character well documented in his "Happy Feet" combo videos. His use of Fox, however, prevented him from easily using his usual combat prowess, and as a result, Silent Spectre and Tang were able to perform the impromptu combo on him. The combo itself consisted of a grab release that was followed up with a final combo consisting of multiple grabs and throws by Silent Spectre with occasional additional hits by Tang and ultimately culminating in a Knee Smash that KOed Zhu. Within the span of only seven seconds, Zhu's damage had gone from 0% to 77%, and he had only hit his opponents once with a poorly placed back aerial.
Shortly before the combo, the commentating team of HomeMadeWaffles, Phil, and Mango can be heard responding with amusement at Zhu's predicament, with one yelling "Happy feet!" in order to reference Zhu's combo videos. As the combo began, however, the team instead responded with shock and awe, ultimately culminating in almost constant yelling by all three. After the end of the match, the stunned response of the smashers taking part in the match, as well as the observers, can also be heard in the background.
Silent Spectre and Tang went on to top the loser's bracket and make it to the grand finals against Mango and PsychoMidget; Silent Spectre and Tang, however, ultimately lost two sets, leading to them winning second place in the tournament.
The term "Wombo Combo"
Contrary to what the video's commentary might imply, and based on the commentary of the previous match of the set, the term "Wombo Combo" was initially a generic term used to refer to either a combo of Fox's Reflector to his up smash (which by itself is technically demanding and reasonably impressive) or any particularly impressive team combo. However, once the combo occurred and was seen to contain both these elements, all previous connotations of the term became antiquated.
The term "Wombo Combo" itself reportedly originates from a pizza offered by the chain "Round Table Pizza". Fittingly, the pizza itself can be considered grandoise, with numerous unusual toppings on it, including artichoke hearts and green onions.
As an internet phenomenon
The profanely-worded combo video quickly became popular in the Smash community due to the absurdity of the commentary and the combo itself. However, the video would later go on to become popular in other communities on the Internet, causing it to become an internet meme. This occured because of the video's humorous reactions that can be partially applied to a wide variety of other games, coining such phrases as "Where are you at?", "Happy feet!", "That ain't Falco", and "Get yo' ass whooped!". The commentary has since been applied to other videos to make them more humourous, such as scenes from the Pokémon anime and a baseball-related video, and has even been cemented in League of Legends terminology to mean "when two teammates attack an opponent with no chance of escape".
To date, the original Wombo Combo video, uploaded by Lumpycpu on 8 December 2008, has attained over three million views on YouTube, a testament to the enduring popularity of the video.
"Sequels" to the Wombo Combo
Owing to the continued dominance of Silver Spectre and Tang, as well as the high popularity of their original combo, multiple sequels to the Wombo Combo were performed over the years following the original video, at least one of which was unofficial. None of these sequel videos, however, have attained the prior popularity of the original video.
Wombo Combo 2
A later reenactment of the Wombo Combo was during a match between Silent Spectre and Tang against Phil and Falcomist on Corneria, in the CGC @ SFSU IX(9) (Bi-Weeklies) Grand Finals 2.2 in San Francisco, CA. The match itself also includes commentary, though only HomeMadeWaffles returned from the original crew, with Replicate instead filling in for Phil and Mango.
This sequel is the only Wombo Combo video to not take place on Battlefield.
Lunch money combo
The lunch money combo was performed in a match between Silent Spectre and Tang against Shroomed and D.P. on Battlefield. The tournament that this event was taken was in the CGC @ SFSU XIII(13) Winners Finals 1.3 in San Francisco, CA. Like the previous two videos, HomeMadeWaffles provided some of the commentary, though this time, he was assisted by Darrell.
The UGS combo
Commonly considered the European version of the Wombo Combo, the UGS combo was done by Armada (Peach) and Aniolas (Sheik) on a Falco on Battlefield. A remixed video was later made, featuring audio from the original Wombo Combo video.
