new melee tier list
self explanatory
Pardon... what?
Alright, to address my latest edit to the news, the reason I changed the date for the Smash service discontinuation is explained in the edit description - received a notice from Nintendo on June 2 that the service would be discontinued at the end of the month, not that it was already discontinued on May 30th.
Now, to address the "June 12th" news that was up there: I hardly think that this glitch, of which I have the highest doubts, is news-worthy. What other glitches are posted in the news for being found? None. Sure, a glitch that makes Master Hand playable would probably be pretty cool and maybe even major, but I just can't believe that after we've played this game for eight years, this "glitch," which could just as easily be an age-old hack, suddenly shows up and makes Master Hand, of all characters, playable? Please, people. We've played this game to death; there's not gonna randomly be a glitch that makes Master Hand playable when we've already been playing as Master Hand with Action Replay codes for years. Nonetheless, if this glitch seems plausible enough when I read about it, I may try it out for myself.
Alright, alright; it seems that this glitch really does exist - but it has since November, so it's hardly new - the root of the word "news" in the first place - anymore. So my editing it out stands, whether people have just recently paid attention to it or not.
Perhaps I'll try this glitch out with a friend at some point. Sounds fun.
Thank you, and good night. Teamrocketspy621 (talk) 01:27, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- I point everyone who disagrees in the direction of the DOJO!!, on which this notice recently appeared: As of June 30th, 2009, the current service that accepts user-generated snapshots, stage designs, and replay data will no longer be available. Please note, however, that we will continue to distribute such data after that date. I've added it to the news template (it's better to have a direct quote from Nintendo (I substituted the word "Nintendo" for "we")). PenguinofDeath 08:07, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

- Well, I really see no use for protecting this page. It is a not a common target for vandalism (in fact, the past 50 edits contained no vandalism, in a time frame that stretches over a year), and it is very probably that news about a new tier list or the results of a national tournament are known by an IP and included by them on here before an admin or user does. So, I'm against protecting this template as of now. Omega Tyrant 02:25, 13 December 2010 (EST)

Project M
Is actually kinda noteworthy, at least in hacking circles. There's also a hefty article about it on AiB. Miles (talk) 20:09, 8 February 2011 (EST)
- I'm not sure. We never had news about the releases of Brawl +, Balanced Brawl, nor Brawl Minus. Also, it's just the demo that been released. Perhaps when the full version comes out we can mention it in our news. Though if we're to do that, we will have to do that for when the complete version of Brawl Minus comes out as well (along with any additional versions of Brawl + and Balanced Brawl). Omega Tyrant 20:25, 8 February 2011 (EST)
- I don't think we should put this kind of stuff in the news at all, because there's always the question of how big/well-known/popular/etc something has to be to be considered notable, which always leads to discussion over whether thing X is notable enough. Toomai Glittershine The Awesome 21:21, 8 February 2011 (EST)
- I think this is the most important and most expected brawl hack, also, it took years on his development, but the newer versoins should not be in the news. Doomolish (talk) 23:30, 8 February 2011 (EST)

SSB4 at next Nintendo Direct
Take a gander over here [2]. The site doesn't provide a source, so I don't think it can go on the news template yet, but put a smile on your face regardless. The site's trustworthy, they always name rumour-based articles with "Rumor:" at the start. Toast ltimatum 13:58, 17 May 2013 (EDT)
- With futher research made, the source would be a Tweet made by @NintendoAmerica. However, it refers to a Nintendo Direct "before the start of E3", which in my eyes reads "around the time of E3". Toast ltimatum 14:02, 17 May 2013 (EDT)

Melee at Evo
SSB4 news requirements
- New/returning character announced
- New/returning item announced
- New/returning stage announced
- New/returning mode announced
Anything else should probably be checked for notability before being added. Miles (talk) 10:27, 21 August 2013 (EDT)
- Really, a new/returning character announced is the only thing really notable to add in the news. The stages, items, and modes aren't really big in my opinion. All the other news that's going on will be unrecgonized if news about a new stage/item appears every few days. Awesome Cardinal 2000 13:05, 21 August 2013 (EDT)
- How the hell are new stages and modes not big news? Especially modes. I'd argue those are bigger news than characters. DoctorPain99 15:06, 21 August 2013 (EDT)
- I agree with the new items being pointless to be in the news, but I think the stages and modes should stay. The stages are although not as big as characters, they are definitely big enough to be in the news section, and like DP99 said, some modes may be even bigger news than characters. Terrible is Terrible 15:41, 21 August 2013 (EDT)

Project M's icon
Project M is a mod of Brawl, and therefore should only be using the icon for Brawl. Scr7 asked for me to respond to his old point of "by this logic, we should remove the SSB64 icons from the Wii article, and the SSB64/Brawl icons from the GameCube Controller article", but that argument is unrelated since SSB64 can be played on the Wii (via VC) and the GameCube controller can be used to play all three games (again, on Wii + VC). Miles (talk) 15:21, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
- How does it hurt to put the Melee icon there when the mod is clearly based on Melee, taking many elements from it? Scr7 (talk · contribs) 15:27, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
- Because, simply put, the game is not Melee. It deviates from Melee in several major ways, such as attempting to rebalance characters (Melee's characters are not, for example) and altering characters movesets in ways that do not match their Melee incarnations. It is "inspired" by Melee, but it's "Project M" and not "Project Melee" deliberately, from what I understand. And on top of all of that, it's a mod for Brawl. Thus it should be labeled strictly as a Brawl mod. Miles (talk) 15:33, 18 September 2013 (EDT)

- Something doesn't have to actually be Melee to have its article icon, it has to relate to Melee, and Project M certainly does. Scr7 (talk · contribs) 15:37, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
- It's not Brawl with Melee physics, it's Melee with Brawl graphics and characters. Adding Melee's icon is fully relevant. Awesome Cardinal 2000 17:30, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
- AC, it is Brawl with Melee-esque physics. It's a mod of Brawl. How much more clear does it get? Miles (talk) 20:46, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
- Yes, it is a Brawl mod designed to be like Melee. The Melee icon stays unless someone actually refutes my point. Scr7 (talk · contribs) 11:00, 19 September 2013 (EDT)
- It was modded off Brawl, but its concepts were based off of Melee, the game was made to be like Melee and is a very influential part of the Melee community. Awesome Cardinal 2000 20:52, 19 September 2013 (EDT)
- It still is primarily Brawl, since it uses the Brawl system, disc, and code as a base, and therefore Brawl is the primary "state" and therefore icon, end of story no discussion.
- I don't really have an opinion whether Project M news items should have a Melee icon, though I do note that the article itself has both icons (and justifiably so, as P:M contains Melee content such as sound effects). Toomai Glittershine The Quiet 22:23, 19 September 2013 (EDT)

SSB4 "Speculation"
I'm not trying to start some mess here, but I think its important that we define what we can and can't speculate about (hear me out). A certain level of speculation seems to be allowed about some things, but not other similar things. For example, on the character pages of returning characters, we allow the labeling of moves that appear similar to moves from previous games, despite no actual proof what moves they are for most of them (Kirby's Uair changed into his Nair at one point, so its not guaranteed), but we dont allow the labeling of returning assist trophy characters as assist trophies, despite that based on the screenshots we have basically the same amount of "proof". It seems a bit inconsistent. I'm not saying we should start just allowing crazy speculation on the wiki, but if a certain amount is being allowed, i think its important to explain (or decide) where the line is (because right now it seems like less of a line and more of a "some unspecified exceptions are tolerated"). What do you guys think? ♡FirstaLasto♥ 14:09, 27 March 2014 (EDT)
- If you are talking about today's picture of Andross, what else could he be? He can't be a stage hazard as he is seen on a Mario stage. He can't be a playable character because Sakurai would update the site to include him. He can't be a Poké Ball because he is not a Pokémon and didn't even originate in the Pokémon series. So Assist Trophy is the only possible option he can be, unless Sakurai was introducing something completely new but if this was something new, Sakurai would announce it instead of just making a joke on Miiverse, and Andross was already an assist trophy in Brawl. SeanWheeler (talk) 21:43, 27 March 2014 (EDT)
- I'm not disagreeing with you (although it could still be a new thing and he is just waiting to mention it for some event or something), but the administration has enforced the no-speculation rule with edits calling certain things (like returning npcs) what they very likely are if not explicitly confirmed, yet let the speculation on other things slide (like returning movesets). I'm trying to point out the inconsistency in allowing certain things without proof and not allowing other things with the same amount of proof, and asking if we can flesh out the rules more to specify what is and isnt allowed when it comes to speculation. I'm not really sure how to better explain what im saying without just repeating my previous post, sorry. ♡FirstaLasto♥ 22:44, 27 March 2014 (EDT)

My perspective is that, because smashers getting sponsors is becoming kinda commonplace now, each one becomes less interesting than the last. - Well the real question is (like many around the wiki), where do we draw the notability line? How notable does a smasher/sponsor have to be to merit a news item? Two months from now, if we hear of another smasher getting sponsored and added to a list already 25 people long, is it really that notable anymore? I wouldn't be opposed to the PPMD sponsorship being added, but I do think it's getting common enough now (the first one was over a month ago) that each new guy isn't worth a frontpage news item. Toomai Glittershine The Awesome 22:52, 10 May 2014 (EDT)
- Prestigious enough of a sponsor such that the name is notable to the gaming community outside Smash. If someone got sponsored by CLASH Tournaments or VGBootcamp tomorrow, that isn't too big of a deal, but if EG or Razer picked up Mew2king tomorrow, that has enough media to merit news imo. Of course who they sponsor plays a part too. If they picked me for whatever reason, then it probably isn't worth noting.--BrianDon't try me! 23:34, 10 May 2014 (EDT)
- EG is one of the greatest E-sports organizations around. Before I heard the term E-sports, or even knew of any other teams; yea, before I knew of Melee's competitive scene, I had Heard of EG. Dr. PP is kinda the best Melee player as far as we know, since he won Apex 2014. Combined, I'd say these two are pretty notable.
