Double Down 2022 was a supermajor which took place on July 8th-10th, 2022 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and featured tournaments for both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was the sequel to Royal Flush and was previously set to be the first Platinum tier stop on the 2020 Smash World Tour for both games on June 5th-7th, 2020 prior to its postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic; the tournament was instead a Platinum stop on the Smash World Tour 2022 for both games. It was later planned for March 25th-27th, 2022 before being postponed again due to problems that arose due to the Omicron variant.[1] Various side events, a Rock Paper Scissors tournament, a Mario Party Superstars minigames bracket, Rivals of Aether brackets, and a Super Mario 64 16 Star speedrun contest also took place. An Ultimate Squad Strike bracket was planned before the tournament's first postponement.

Controversies

Hungrybox

Prior to playing his Top 12 match on the 3rd day of the tournament, Hungrybox tweeted that he was coughing blood but tested negative for COVID-19. Despite his condition, Hungrybox played and won his match against SFAT to make it to Top 8 before DQing himself out of the tournament for safety reasons. Hungrybox received significant negative backlash for allowing himself to compete despite being ill and for not wearing a mask, potentially exposing many attendees to his infection. The TOs also received backlash for allowing Hungrybox to compete and not penalizing him for not wearing a mask. Hungrybox later issued an apology and promised to wear a mask at all future events.[3]

Technicals

Two years after the 2020 Super Smash Bros. sexual misconduct allegations, YouTuber Technicals joined Double Down 2022 as a spectator, with a sign and the phrase "Ban Nairo" written on it throughout the tournament. After the conclusion to the grand finals of Ultimate and during ProtoBanham's celebration, Technicals would go on to pull up the sign in front of cameras and the audience in reference to the aforementioned controversy.[4] Technicals was subsequently escorted out of the venue by tournament staff, [5] and his actions and attendance in the tournament has led to both backlash and confusion by many in the Smash community, especially in regards to how he had been able to enter the venue despite being banned from all tournaments. This action was later censored in a VOD rediffusion of Double Down 2022.[6]

Trivia

  • In reference to being held at a casino, like its predecessor, the tournament is named after a player option in the game Blackjack.
  • Junebug made Top 16 in both Melee singles and doubles, yet also DQ'd from both brackets for separate reasons. For doubles, he and his teammate (Shakedrizzle) DQ'd due to a conflict with Junebug's commentary schedule, graciously giving Peanut and Dutch (the opponents that they had just beat to make it into Top 16) the win and finishing 17th on paper.[7] The following day, Junebug voluntarily ended his own impressive run as solo Dr. Mario at 13th by DQ'ing against SFAT in order to attend a magic show.[8]
  • This tournament marks:
    • The first time S2J has defeated Hungrybox in an offline Melee tournament set.
    • The highest placement of a Yoshi player at a major Melee tournament, with aMSa reaching Grand Finals and placing 2nd for the first time in his career.
    • ProtoBanham's first North American Ultimate major win.
    • Marss's lowest Ultimate placement tied with his 33rd at Riptide. This was then surpassed by a 65th at Super Smash Con 2022, a months later.
  • After being upset in pools by frawg, Dabuz went on an impressive 11-set run in Loser's bracket to ultimately finish 4th.
