Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Fighter spirit

Revision as of 00:07, November 21, 2021 by Diddy Kongstar (talk | contribs) (→‎Trivia: Adding Zero Suit Samus's casual outfits and Little Mac's hoodie costumes.)

Fighter spirits are a type of spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As the name suggests, they are spirits that are based on the playable roster in the game. Like master spirits, fighter spirits do not have any stats, as they are not used in gameplay in any way, though unlike master spirits, they are not used to assist the player at all, only being used for display purposes.

A character's fighter spirit is unlocked either when the player completes Classic Mode as that character, or they purchase it in the Vault shop for 300G. When the player views the fighter spirit in the Collection, the default artwork will be artwork from their home series, but the player can switch it with their artwork from Ultimate instead. Characters that have other characters as alternate costumes (such as gender swaps, the Koopalings, Alph, and the Dragon Quest III, IV, and VIII Heroes) or significant alternate costumes (such as Mario's Building and Wedding Outfits or Pikachu Libre) have separate fighter spirits from the base fighter than can only be unlocked in the Vault Shop. The Mario (Wedding), Meta Ridley, Ike (Path of Radiance), Cloud (Advent Children), and Inkling (Boy) spirits can also be unlocked via challenges, and the Mario (Wedding) spirit can also be unlocked via the Wedding Mario amiibo.

Trivia

Mythra's original design in her fighter spirit's artwork.
  • Several fighter spirits do not have artwork from their home series to swap with their Ultimate artwork, instead solely using their Ultimate artwork. These characters are Pokémon Trainer, Robin, Wii Fit Trainer, Cloud (in his Advent Children costume), Kazuya (in his default costume) and the Mii Fighters.
    • Both male and female Pokémon Trainer do have artwork from Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, but they're most likely unused as all of the other Pokémon spirits from the game's launch (except for Detective Pikachu) use artwork from Pokémon Global Link.
    • Robin does not have any official artwork from Fire Emblem Awakening, but does have in-game dialogue portraits that another character (Tharja) uses in her spirit as well. They do have artwork in Fire Emblem Heroes and Fire Emblem Warriors, but the rights to those artworks are owned by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo respectively, not Nintendo.
    • The Wii Fit Trainer does not have any official artwork in any of the Wii Fit games, but her colorful silhouettes were seen.
    • While Cloud's default spirit has artwork, his Advent Children costume does not, possibly due to stricter licensing issues with Square Enix with using artwork from a movie rather than a video game. While his Advent Children costume has artwork from Dissidia Final Fantasy NT the artwork is owned by Koei Tecmo. However, prior to version 10.1.0, this distinction applied to the default costume as well, but with said update, the fighter spirit gained artwork from Final Fantasy VII, making Cloud the first fighter to have his fighter spirit changed through an update.
    • Being characters original to the Super Smash Bros. series, the Mii Fighters do not have any sources outside of the Super Smash Bros. series to use for their fighter spirits.
    • While Kazuya's Coat costume has alternate artwork, the reason for Kazuya's default costume not having artwork is unknown, just like Robin's artwork from Fire Emblem Heroes and Fire Emblem Warriors, as he has plenty of artwork from the Tekken series, but is likely unused as all other Tekken spirits (except for Nina Williams and Yoshimitsu) use artwork from Tekken 7, which lacks artwork of Kazuya in his Gi. Kazuya is the only DLC fighter with this distinction, as well as the only character whose alternate costume has artwork but the default does not.
  • There are several significant alternate costumes which do not have their own fighter spirit, including:
    • Link's Tunic of the Wild costume.
    • Zero Suit Samus's Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion casual outfits.
    • Spiky-eared Pichu.
    • R.O.B.'s Famicom costume (including the Japanese version where the spirit image still uses a photograph of R.O.B.'s international colors).
    • Isabelle's winter coat.
    • Little Mac's hoodie, wireframe, and wireframe hoodie alternate costumes.
    • Shulk's Ecru Type (swimsuit) costume.
    • Piranha Plant in a pot.
    • Zombie and Enderman, though they are represented as primary spirits.
    • Sephiroth's coatless costume.
      • Of these, Spiky-eared Pichu and winter Isabelle are the only ones that have official artwork in their home series (excluding Piranha Plant, which already uses artwork in a pipe for its default spirit, and Zombie and Enderman, again due to them already being primary spirits).
  • Excluding the ones who only use their Ultimate artwork, Bayonetta is the only fighter that uses artwork from a game outside of her own series, as her "Bayonetta (Bayonetta)" fighter spirit uses artwork from Anarchy Reigns.
    • Although Pac-Man's fighter spirit was used in Sonic Dash, it does not originate from there, instead being generic promotional artwork from Bandai Namco.
  • The Legend of Zelda is the only universe with multiple fighters whose fighter spirits are not organized by fighter number. If they were, Sheik would be placed before Zelda, and Young Link would be placed before Ganondorf.
    • Similarly, the Koopalings are not ordered the same way as they are on the character selection screen when selecting Bowser Jr.'s alternate costumes.
  • Meta Ridley and Ike (Path of Radiance) are the only fighter spirits that cannot be unlocked via the Vault Shop.
  • Lucas, Mr. Game & Watch, and the Ice Climbers are the only fighters to use sprites for their fighter spirits.
  • Ness and R.O.B. are the only fighters to use real-life photographs for their fighter spirits.
  • Min Min, Pyra, and Mythra all had spirits before becoming playable; as such, their fighter spirits are denoted with "(Fighter)".
  • Joker is the only character to have a unique Smash render in their fighter spirit, as he uses artwork of him without his mask on as well as Arsène appearing with a render exclusive to the spirit. He is also the only character to feature another character not mentioned by name in their home series spirit artwork, again being Arsène.
  • Neither Luma nor the Pikmin are present in the home series artwork for Rosalina, Olimar, and Alph's fighter spirits, nor are they mentioned by name (except for Olimar and Alph in Japanese), despite being present in their Ultimate artwork. They instead have separate primary and support spirits.
  • Much like her standard spirit in the base game, Mythra's fighter spirit was altered to avoid raising the game's age rating. This makes Mythra the only character whose design was explicitly edited in her fighter spirit artwork.
    • Palutena, Bayonetta, female Corrin and Pyra's fighter spirits remain unchanged, even though their actual appearances were altered in a similar manner.
  • Sora is the only character whose fighter spirit artwork and Smash artwork share the same pose (barring the Timeless River costume), although Sora's default spirit more resembles his artwork from the original Kingdom Hearts rather than his render for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix.
    • Additionally, if Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings are excluded (as they are each individual characters despite sharing the same character slot), Sora has the most fighter spirits out of any character.
