HKSBC Newcomer Invitational Cup was a regional tournament held in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, on September 26th, 2020. Only players who have less than 1,500 points or are unranked on the Hong Kong Smash Bros. Club Power Rankings can participate. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers will also be directly invited to the HKSBC 2nd Anniversary CUP, and they will automatically skip winners round 1 in said tournament.
Despite the name "invitational", the tournament did not run in an invitational format.
The tournament was originally scheduled on June 27th, 2020, but was delayed to July 11th, 2020 due to the tournament being too close to the student exam.[1] Later on July 9th, 2020, HKSBC announced that the tournament will be tentatively delayed to July 25th, 2020 due to another recent coronavirus outbreak in Hong Kong.[2] On July 19th, 2020, HKSBC announced that the tournament will be delayed indefinitely under the pandemic, online weeklies will be continued to be organized.[3] On September 8th, 2020, HKSBC announced that the tournament will resume on September 26th, 2020, however, due to the current date being too apart from the initial date, HKSBC has cancelled all registrations so that players can register again. [4]
