A Bucculus (ブチュルス, Bucculus) is a parasitic enemy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary, and first appears in The Lake level. It's known for its infamous kiss attack, which is the most damaging move in the series.

Appearance

A Bucculus looks like a plant with large, red lips and a purple poison zone on the back that resembles a strawberry. It hides deep in the ground, with only its lips showing.

In the Subspace Emissary

It appears as red lips on the ground: if the player goes near it, it will pop up nearly instantly and stick to the character. There is no possibility to dodge the attack, thus the only possible strategy is to stay away from it. Once stuck, Bucculus will emit cartoon-like "boing" noises and attack by kissing the player repeatedly, filling up its poison zone, absorbing health and causing immense damage. It usually deals three hits per second.

On Intense difficulty, its kiss can raise the player's damage from 0% to 999% in slightly less than eight seconds. It could also try to carry the player past the blast lines for a guaranteed KO, which isn't much dangerous on "still" stages, but becomes a real danger on stages with a moving blast line. In these stages the player is quite likely to suffer a guaranteed KO, being trapped between two obstacles or carried beyond a blast line, due to being unable to move as long as Bucculus is attached.

If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around and plant itself again after a few seconds. If a Bucculus with a filled poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop a Maxim Tomato, but it could occasionally drop Food otherwise. The player does not need to weaken an "empty" Bucculus to turn it into a trophy with a trophy stand, since its base health is always very low (even on Intense). However, when Bucculus absorbs energy from the player with its kiss, its life bar greatly increases, up to about five times its minimum.

Although the player is unable to move with a stuck Bucculus on him, he will have to press an attack button repeatedly to make Bucculus break away. Bucculus will then plant itself again in the ground. Notice that Bucculus doesn't break away by itself, and that this action will require more time as difficulty increases, from around three seconds on Easy to nearly six on Intense.

The following list shows the damage inflicted by Bucculus for every difficulty, respectively for each hit and per second (notice that it can inflict around three hits per second):

  • Easy: 23% per hit, 69% per second.
  • Normal: 29% per hit, 87% per second.
  • Hard: 33% per hit, 99% per second.
  • Very Hard: 37% per hit, 111% per second.
  • Intense: 43% per hit, 129% per second.

As shown, Bucculus' kiss is the most damaging move in the series, being able to inflict 999% in less than eight seconds on Intense. However, multiple Floows attacking together can deal the same ludicrous amount in much less time: even less than three seconds if four enemies attack the same player.

Notice that Bucculus' health will rise and peak at around five times its base value, after he it absorbed enough vitality from the player (it can be noticed due to a swelling of its body).

Trophy description

A Subspace Army enemy found firmly planted in the ground, with only its lips showing. These lips, by the way, are covered with spikes that stick in its victim to... (Get this!)...suck out vitality. Basically, this results in serious damage. The torso area has a poison zone where it stores vitality. The Bucculus not only looks offensive-- boy, it's rotten to the core.

Trivia

  • When a Bucculus sucks a character's vitality, it makes a slashing sound and animation.
  • On the lower difficulties only, players can heal themselves with a Bucculus by letting it sap their health for a bit and then knocking it out. If the player is able to escape before the Bucculus gives 50% damage, the player can KO the Bucculus and receive a Maxim Tomato, healing more of a percentage than the damage given.
  • Bucculus attacks in a similar way to Leap, an enemy from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. The differences are that Bucculus inflicts more damage, as it drains energy, and it resides underground rather than in the air.
  • In Subspace (Part II), the translucent terrain allows the player to see the body of a Bucculus that is still buried. The same happens in The Great Maze.
