Yoshi's Island is a stage in Super Smash Bros. and is Yoshi's home stage. It is also a playable stage (as Past Stages: Yoshi's Island) in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Yoshi's Island

The stage has a paper and cardboard sort of look. The main platform is on a book. There are three platforms that hover above it. The bottom two are sloping inward a little bit while the top one is flat. On the left side of the stage, there is one cloud, while on the right side, there are two clouds (one near the stage while the other on the other side). The clouds will disappear after standing on them for about four seconds, but will reappear seven seconds later .

Strangely enough, during a round in Super Smash Bros.' 1P Game, the clouds on the sides of the stage are absent. A GameShark code can be entered to enable this stage without the clouds on the sides of the baseline platform.

In competitive play, this stage is banned due to Cloud camping (namely as Fox, for his Blaster can be used for gimp kills because of the long hitstun) and the fact that certain Characters, such as Link cannot recover from the far right cloud.

Past Stages: Yoshi's Island

The stage returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee as an unlockable stage, unlocked by hitting Sandbag 1,350 ft (400m) in the Home Run Contest with Yoshi.

Trivia

  • In Melee, Yoshi's Island is slightly larger than the original in SSB.
  • In SSB, the background with the sun, clouds, and ocean remained still no matter which way you looked, but in Melee the background is rendered in 3D.
  • Even though this stage was called Yoshi's Island, it is based on Yoshi's Story, possibly more than the Stage Yoshi's story itself.
  • In Melee, the smiling heart in the middle from the Super Happy Tree moves much slower than it did in SSB.

Origin

This stage takes its look from the Nintendo 64 game: Yoshi's Story. The game's music is a slightly remixed version and the features in it are slightly the same as well, featuring an information box on one side and the Super Happy Tree from the game in the middle as well. It is most likely a mixture of Page 3 in Yoshi's Story and the title screen, seeing as the title screen is a picture book.
