Chrom (クロム, Chrom) is the main protagonist of Fire Emblem Awakening, descendant of Marth, father of Lucina, and close ally to Robin.
Character description
Chrom is one of the three main protagonists of Fire Emblem Awakening. A distant descendant of the Hero-King Marth, Chrom is the prince of the Halidom of Ylisse, younger brother to its leader, the Exalt Emmeryn, and the leader of a group of Ylissean soldiers known as the Shepherds. The story of Awakening begins with Chrom, his sister Lissa, and his bodyguard Frederick, finding an amnesiac tactician by the roadside who joins the Shepherds. After Ylisse's struggle against the neighboring nation of Plegia, Chrom becomes the new Exalt of Ylisse, gets married, and becomes the father of a baby girl, Lucina.
During a war against the warmongering empire of Valm two years later, a time-traveling Lucina from the future of another timeline reveals herself, warning Chrom of the looming threat of the Fell Dragon Grima who had destroyed the world in her timeline. Chrom, Lucina, and the rest of the Shepherds work together to defeat Walhart of Valm, Validar of the Grima-worshipping Grimleal, and Grima himself.
Chrom, like most Fire Emblem protagonists, begins in the Lord class. His signature weapon is Falchion, inherited by the royal family of Ylisse as descendants of Marth; Chrom also uses Falchion's counterpart, the Fire Emblem or Binding Shield. In addition to Lucina, Chrom can also be the father of another child depending on who he marries.
Since Awakening, Chrom has appeared in a number of other games. He makes an appearance in an Awakening-based mission in Fire Emblem Fates, where he meets Corrin. In the crossover game Project X Zone 2, he is one of three playable Nintendo characters (alongside Lucina and Fiora). Chrom is also prominently featured as a major character in both Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE and Fire Emblem Warriors, and is one of the many units the player can recruit in Fire Emblem Heroes.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Chrom appears in Lucina and Robin's trailer. In the beginning, he is shown lying on the ground after being incapacitated by Captain Falcon in battle. Lucina defends him, but is almost defeated herself. For the majority of the trailer, he is only seen laying on the ground. However, at the end, still badly hurt, he remarks that he "will get [his] chance another day;" a gameplay video immediately after this scene displays Robin’s Final Smash and states that Chrom will get it today instead, confirming his involvement as part of the Final Smash. He also appears at the top of Lucina and Robin's “New Challenger” artwork on the official website.
While he was considered to be a playable character due to the seemingly credible Gematsu leaks, he is not a playable character in SSB4. According to Masahiro Sakurai, he did initially consider adding Chrom as a playable character after playing Fire Emblem Awakening in his spare time, but denied him in favor of Robin when he saw that Chrom would end up another swordsman made redundant by the existing fighting styles of Marth and Ike. Robin would allegedly remedy this by providing a plethora of unique moveset options with Tomes and the Levin Sword.[1] This is referenced in Pit's Smash Taunt for Robin, where Palutena and Viridi deride Chrom for being a "carbon copy" of Ike, irking Chrom by saying so.
Assist role
In the game, he will appear as part of Robin's Final Smash, Pair Up. After being summoned by Robin with warp magic, Chrom lunges in Robin's direction. If he successfully connects with an opponent along the way, he'll launch the opponent into the air and repeatedly strike them with his Falchion, while Robin will attack with various tomes. Chrom also appears in one of Robin's victory poses, where the two stand back-to-back and he may comment “my strength is yours!”
As a background character
Chrom also appears as a special guest character during Pit's conversations with Palutena in Palutena's Temple if Robin is present. Chrom's portraits and Critical Hit cut-in artwork from Awakening are reused in the aforementioned Smash Taunt and Pair Up, respectively.
As a costume
Chrom's costume serves as a alternate color scheme for Ike. His design is also the basis of a downloadable costume for Mii Swordfighters. Nintendo also released a QR code for those who wish to have the exact Mii used in the costume's advertising.
Trophy
Chrom appears as a trophy in both versions of SSB4.
- Prince of the Halidom of Ylisse and descendant of the Hero-King Marth. He leads a militia force called the Shepherds that protects Ylisse. Though he can get reckless when training—things end up broken—he can be counted on in the heat of battle. He and Robin combine their skills in Robin's Final Smash.
- The prince of the Halidom of Ylisse and a descendant of the Hero-King Marth. Chrom and his militia, the Shepherds, swear to protect the people of Ylisse. Despite being more than competent in battle, he's rather careless in training and always seems to be breaking things. He and Robin combine their skills in Robin's Final Smash.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
As a playable character
Chrom finally makes his debut as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate after being a background character in the previous game, now branded as an Echo Fighter of Roy. He was revealed alongside Simon, Richter, Dark Samus, and King K. Rool in the August 2018 Smash Direct. Matthew Mercer and Tomokazu Sugita, Chrom’s recurring English and Japanese voice actors respectively since Awakening, both reprise their roles and confirmed such on Twitter.
Chrom’s inclusion was primarily facilitated by popular demand both within and outside of the Super Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot. In a Famitsu interview shortly following the August 2018 Smash Direct, Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Chrom and fellow Echo Fighter Dark Samus were highly requested characters but in different regions of the world; most of the support for Chrom came from Japan while Dark Samus’s came from overseas, being North America and Europe.[2]
Chrom’s normal attacks lack the hilt sweetspot and fire effects of Roy’s Binding Blade, though his Falchion’s damage distribution is consistent throughout the sword and he adopts his sword’s sound effects. This is identical to how Lucina’s Parallel Falchion differs from Marth’s Exalted Falchion in terms of performance. Attacks such as jab and forward tilt do not have Chrom holding his sword in a reverse-grip like Roy, making his animations slightly different. Chrom’s Flare Blade is identical in function and KO power to Roy’s and can even be turned around mid-charge, but lack his explosive fire effects. His Double-Edge Dance is functionally identical to his base character; a series of four rapid sword slashes that can be angled to alter the direction of the swings, only differing in the aforementioned lack of a hilt sweetspot and fire effects. His up special, Soaring Slash, is adapted from Ike’s Aether in which Chrom launches his opponent skyward before slamming them back to the ground, albeit without throwing the sword upward. His Counter is similar in property to Roy’s, having a 1.35x multiplier but also a high falling speed in midair, making it risky to use for edgeguarding offstage. Finally, his Final Smash, Awakening Aether, is functionally more similar to Marth and Lucina’s Critical Hit as Chrom dashes forward to catch opponents rather than standing still. Chrom has unique dialogue if he wins against Robin or Lucina; in any of his three victory screens, he may say “our bonds are stronger than steel.”
As a background character
Despite being a separate playable fighter, Robin continues to summon Chrom in their Final Smash Pair Up and Chrom continues to appear in one of Robin's victory screens as well. And prior to version 3.0.0, Chrom shared the standard Fire Emblem victory theme with Marth, Roy, and Ike despite fellow Awakening characters Robin and Lucina now have an original victory theme inspired by Fire Emblem Awakening’s “Id (Purpose).” The Chrom Mii Swordfighter costume also returns as an unlockable after being DLC in the previous installment.

Trivia
- Chrom's English voice actor, Matthew Mercer, directed, produced, and portrayed Ganondorf, Kirby, and Meta Knight in the Super Smash Bros.-based webseries, There Will Be Brawl.
- In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Chrom's cape does not have animations when he is summoned by Robin in their Final Smash.
- Chrom is the first character to be a full clone of another character who was also formerly a full clone.
- Interestingly, Chrom had been considered to be clone to a different character, as stated by Viridi in Palutena's Guidance for Smash for Wii U.
- Chrom is one of two playable characters to appear in a Final Smash before becoming playable, with the other being Palutena. Unlike Palutena, however, Chrom still retains his Final Smash role in the game he is playable in.
- Chrom is also the first (and so far, only) Final Smash assisting character to also be playable in the same game.
- Chrom is also the second playable character to have a significant non-playable role in the same game, the first being R.O.B.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Chrom and Samus are the only playable characters to appear in another fighter's Final Smash; however, unlike with Chrom, Samus appears in the Final Smash used by her alter-ego, Zero Suit Samus, via temporary transformation.
- Chrom is also the first (and so far, only) Final Smash assisting character to also be playable in the same game.
- Chrom so far is the only fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series to have their victory theme be changed via game updates, as in Ultimate he previously had the standard Fire Emblem victory theme before it was changed to the Awakening victory theme in version 3.0.0.
- Chrom is the only playable Fire Emblem character to have appeared in the series in a non-playable capacity prior to his playable debut, as he only appeared in Robin's Final Smash, Pair Up, in Super Smash Bros. 4.
- Chrom has the same voice actor as Yusuke Kitagawa in both Japanese and English, Tomokazu Sugita and Matthew Mercer respectively. Coincidentally, both also have blue hair. Likely as a result, Yusuke is represented by Chrom in the former's Spirit battle in Ultimate.
