A ninja-like fighter that battles with moves like the Water Shuriken. Greninja can use a log for clever counterattacks, and this Pokémon can even stick to walls. During its Final Smash, it turns into Ash-Greninja...!?

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   Greninja's model features a slightly more subdued color scheme.

Attributes

  •   Like all characters, Greninja's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  •   Down tilt launches at a more upward angle, improving its combo potential.
  •   Down tilt has a new animation - a downward sweep with its hand.
  •   Dash attack has an altered animation, with Greninja stopping half way through the spin.
  •   Up Smash now utilizes water kunai instead of water katanas, similar to Ash's Greninja in the anime.

Special moves

  •   Water Shurikens appear visually sharper.
  •   During Shadow Sneak, the shadow's eyes flash red just before release, making it easier to predict the attack.
  •   Shadow Sneak's attack features a new animation - a forward kick.
  •   Substitute activates faster, making it harder to avoid the attack.
  •   Substitute has more vibrant particles when activated.
  •   Greninja now turns into Ash-Greninja during its Final Smash. Whether it's an aesthetic change to Secret Ninja Attack or a completely different Final Smash is currently unknown.

Trivia

  • Greninja's new character portrait resembles its air dodge animation.
  • Greninja is the only playable member of a regional starter Pokémon trio to not be part of Pokémon Trainer's rotation.
  • Coincidentally, Greninja's fighter number, 50, is the same as the number of its costume in Super Mario Maker.
  • In the Pokémon series, a Greninja has to be male to become Ash-Greninja. This confirms that Greninja is male in Ultimate.
