Snake (スネーク, Snake) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Rather than Kiefer Sutherland, who voiced his predecessor in the Metal Gear Solid V series, David Hayter confirmed on Twitter that he would be reprising his role as Snake.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Aesthetics
- Snake retains his design from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which in turn is based off Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. However, his body suit appears less form-fitting than before, and his overall appearance appears to be more detailed, particularly his hair and bandana.
- Snake has refined animations for many of his moves.
- Snake's series symbol has changed from the FOX logo to the "❗" Alert symbol seen in Metal Gear Solid games.
- Snake has two additional alternate costumes, increasing his total to 8. Like in Brawl, these costumes resemble camouflage worn by Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. One is a pure black costume resembling the Black Camouflage. The other is a lighter green costume resembling the Leaf Camouflage.
- Snake has a new victory animation. He does a spin kick, a side kick, and then finishes with a pose.
Attributes
- The universal 3-frame jumpsquat has proportionally given Snake the largest benefit of any character; a massive improvement over his previous 10 frames.
Ground attacks
- Up tilt now shows a trail to visualize its once-deceptively large hitbox. Its horizontal range and knockback seems to have been reduced regardless.
- Forward tilt is much weaker. (17% → 13.6%)
- Snake’s previous down smash has been changed into a double-sided kick.
Aerial attacks
- Neutral aerial is slightly faster and has less ending lag.
- Forward aerial is slightly faster.
Throws/other attacks
- Up throw has increased followup potential.
- Due to the removal of chain grabbing, Snake can no longer use down throw repeatedly, reducing his potential damage output.
Special attacks
- Hand Grenades are much larger.
- Remote Missile travels faster.
- Remote Missile uses a different sound when preparing to fire a missile.
- The C4 now emits a flashing red light for a few seconds after being placed, improving its visibility.
- Snake now remains crouched when detonating a C4 from a crouching position.
- Snake has a new currently unnamed Final Smash. It involves him marking opponents with a crosshair, before calling an airstrike on the marked victims.

Trivia
- Snake was announced to return in Ultimate on June 12th 2018, which was also the 10 year anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
- Snake is the only character in Smash history to have their logo entirely changed: the FOX logo was altered to the "❗" Alert symbol from Metal Gear Solid.
- This is possibly due to the FOX logo also being the logo for Kojima Productions, who no longer works for Konami. Konami, however, still owns the Metal Gear franchise, making a logo change necessary.
- Snake is the only third-party fighter to have skipped an installment.
- Snake is also the only character from an M rated series to skip an installment.
