King Dedede is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced on January 10, 2014 to commemorate the release of Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan. Like most characters, he appears to have a more cartoonish appearance in Smash 4 than he did in Brawl, being more brightly colored and looking reminiscent of his appearance in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. He additionally has been shown to have even more exaggerated facial expressions. His model also appears to be sporting a graphical effect that accentuates the fuzz on his robes and crown.
Changes from Brawl
Despite being a high tier character in Brawl, Dedede appears to have gained many buffs, but not without some nerfs. In addition, some of his moves have been changed entirely in terms of animation, similar to Bowser.
- King Dedede appears to jump higher.
- He has better air speed.
- His foward tilt now hits multiple times with more damage and knockback.
- Jab has a finisher, and can still rapid jab.
- Up aerial is stronger.
- Super Dedede Jump can now bury grounded opponents.
- His down tilt is now a roll that sends him forward, with more KO power.
- Waddle Dee Toss has been replaced by a move that exclusively throws Gordos, known in Japan as ゴルドー投げ (Gordo Throw). It involves Dedede picking up a Gordo, and then hitting it with his hammer to hit it across the stage. The Gordos appear to travel slower and are weaker than they were in Brawl, now hit opponents horizontally instead of vertically, and when they hit an opponent, they bounce off them softly instead of continuing on their path. Gordos bouncing off a hit target can be hit again, and they disappear if they land on the ground. It also appears opponents can hit Gordos to knock them back at Dedede, overall it is more consistenly reliable than his old side special.
- Forward aerial now hits from above.
- Down air is now a single hit attack.
- It has slowed down a bit.
- New back air has more range and power.
- It is also slower and with more lag
- Up tilt is weaker.
- Back throw deals 14% instead of 16%.
- Neutral aerial is now a 360 degree flip spin.
- Back aerial is now a reverse hammer swing.
- Down throw is now a throw similar in animation to Mario's down throw.
- It deals less damage and sends opponents upwards, depriving Dedede of his outstanding chaingrabbing ability he had in Brawl.
- Jet Hammer produces much more intense lighting that visually lights up the surrounding areas, and Dedede now visibly sweats with a grimacing facial expression when using the move. Jet Hammer also produces a wind effect, though it's unknown if it is purely aesthetic. No functional differences with the move are known at this time.
Special Moves
In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but none of King Dedede's have been seen. He retains three of his original special moves. Waddle Dee Toss has been readjusted into a move that has Dedede exclusively toss Gordos called Gordo Throw. He has a new final smash. These are King Dedede's special moves:
Special Move | Basic | Custom 1 | Custom 2 |
---|---|---|---|
Neutral Special | Inhale | - | - |
Side Special | Gordo Throw | - | - |
Up Special | Super Dedede Jump | - | - |
Down Special | Jet Hammer | - | - |

Trivia
- Ike, Lucario, Peach, Charizard, King Dedede, and Diddy Kong were the only returning characters confirmed before E3 2014 to not be playable in any demo version of Super Smash Bros. 4.
- King Dedede's new forward aerial is a reference to one of his attacks in the Kirby series.
