The Special Movie is a nearly-fifteen minute long bonus video included in the NTSC versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee, found in the Archives sub-menu of the Data menu. The clip itself features the starter characters and their abilities, as well as various single-player modes (both Classic Mode and Adventure Mode), items, stages, and trophies.

Various elements different from the final game can be seen in this clip, such as Peach having different voice clips, and Temple having unused platforms.

The movie is not available in the PAL versions of Melee, speculated to be due to the inability to fit all translated languages of the movie onto the disc.

Trivia

  • Some characters are seen having the same alternate costume as another, something that is usually impossible without hacking.
  • Bowser, Samus, Ice Climbers, and Ness are the only four characters that do not have a song of their own. Bowser appears right after Captain Falcon and so he uses "Mute City", Samus appears right after Fox and so she uses "Corneria", the Ice Climbers appear right after Pikachu and so they use "Poke Floats", and Ness appears right after Kirby and so he uses "Green Greens".
    • Of these, Bowser is the only character who is not the sole Melee representative of their franchise. However, he is from the Super Mario franchise even though he appears after Captain Falcon; but though being from the Super Mario franchise he uses the song "Mute City" instead of "Princess Peach's Castle". "Princess Peach's Castle" is both Mario and Peach's song for the Mario and Peach sections.
  • Although Mario and Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Link and Zelda, Captain Falcon, Fox, Pikachu, and Kirby use songs from their own franchises, Mario and Peach are the only two ones that do not use one of their credits themes. Instead of Mario having "Super Mario Bros. 3" and Peach having "Rainbow Cruise", they both use the song "Princess Peach's Castle" (which is Bowser's credits theme). "Rainbow Cruise" actually plays on Section 16 (which is "Items"). The remaining eight use a song which is one of their credits themes (like Donkey Kong with "Kongo Jungle", Yoshi with "Yoshi's Island", Link and Zelda with "Great Bay", Fox with "Corneria", Pikachu with "Poke Floats", and Kirby with "Green Greens").
  • Fourside, Poke Floats, and Battlefield are the only three unlockable stages (or unlockable stage references) that appear in the Special Movie. Fourside is seen at Captain Falcon's section (Section 8), the song "Poke Floats" plays in Pikachu's section (Section 13) and Ice Climbers's (Section 14)-*where Ice Climbers appear right after Pikachu and use "Poke Floats" like Pikachu rather than "Icicle Mountain".*, and Battlefield is seen in Ness's section (Section 19). And Fourside, Poke Floats, and Battlefield (the two unlockable stage references) appear even if Fourside, Poke Floats, and Battlefield are not unlocked yet; just because Special Movie under Data and Archives is available from the start.
