Cubone (カラカラ, Karakara in Japanese language versions) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise. It is a pure Ground type Pokémon, making an appearance in the earliest games.

Creature description

Cubone is a small brown bipedal dinosaur-like Pokémon whose head is always covered by a skull as a helmet, and who carries a bone in one hand as a weapon. Pokédex entries in the RPG series illustrate that the helmet is the skull of its dead mother, who died right after its birth, and it never removes the skull under any circumstance; to this day, its real face has yet to be seen and known. It pines for the mother it will never see again. When it becomes lonesome and/or thinks of its dead mother, which can happen if it sees a likeness of its mother in the full moon, it cries. The skull rattles hollowly and emits a plaintive and mournful sound, and the stains on it are made by the tears it sheds.

Cubone first appeared in Pokémon Red and Green/Red and Blue, where a plot point required the player to travel up the graveyard Pokémon Tower and battle the spirit of its evolved form Marowak, killed by Team Rocket, to put it to rest. The Marowak is the only wild Pokémon that cannot be caught in any way, as it dodges all Poké Balls thrown at it. Pokémon Tower was also the only place Cubone could be caught, though it later started appearing in the Safari Zone in Pokémon Yellow.

Cubone also appeared in Pokémon Gold and Silver, though here, since Pokémon Tower had been converted into a Radio Station, Cubones had taken refuge in the nearby Rock Tunnel. Crystal Version added the possibility of buying one at the Goldenrod Game Corner, making an excellent early addition to the team.

Despite being absent from Generations 3 and 4, Cubone was one of the possible starter Pokémon in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

As a stage element

Cubone is a Pokémon that appears on the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage on the Ground Type Stage alongside Dugtrio. It has no effect on game play whatsoever.

Trophy Description

A Lonely Pokémon. It wears its mother's skull as a helmet-for this reason, no one has ever seen its face. It sometimes sees its departed mother's face in the full moon, which causes it to grow sad and cry. The stains on the skull are tracks of its tears. When it cries, the skull shakes and emits a mournful sound. When it levels up, it evolves into Marowak's Fat Butt.
