Formally his e-mail was "matt.zab@comcast.net" which was his first name and the first 3 letters of his last name. His friend, while sending an e-mail to MattDotZeb typed "matt.zeb@comcast.net" Directly following the incident, that friends sister yelled "matt.zeb!" and called him that the next time she saw him. His friend began calling him that, following his sister. His friend's girlfriend was introduced to Matt with that name. She, in turn, told her friends.
Eventually, it stuck as a nickname.
