Bayonetta is one of the last members of the Umbra Witches, an entirely female clan of black magic practitioners. Umbra Witches form contracts with Inferno, granting them immense strength, knowledge, and the ability to summon Infernal Demons in exchange for their souls upon dying. Bayonetta is bound to the mighty Madama Butterfly, whose arms, legs, and even head are summoned during battle. She fights angels from Paradiso on a regular basis, working as a nun as a way to locate them. She spends most of her time in the world between the human world, Inferno, and Paradiso called Purgatorio, where she and anyone else inside said world appear invisible to humans, though the environment is shared between the two. Using various weapons forged by the weapon smith/bartender Rodin, Bayonetta faces various members of the Laguna, her friend and rival Jeanne, and even the very demons she summons.

Personality wise Bayonetta is strong willed, determined, cocky, flirtatious, snarky, and has an endless supply of sarcastic come-backs for anything and everything thrown at her. Despite being a witch, and using the powers of Inferno to kill angels, Bayonetta's moral compass is as straight as an arrow. She has a soft spot when it comes to interacting with children. Upon meeting characters such as Cereza and Loki she initially acts like she doesn't care about them, treating them as an annoyance. However it does not take long for her to grow attached to said children, and begins fondly referring to them as "''Little One''", and will start going out of her way to make sure either child is safe regardless of the situation. Also being indirectly responsible for the murder of Luka's father when he was a small child, Bayonetta made it a point to always check up on him as he grew up, even going so far as to give him the nickname "Cheshire", after her favorite doll she had as a child.

She is also very loyal to those she cares about. In the second game, Jeanne's soul is stolen away as a result of one of Bayonetta's demons turning on her. Bayonetta was determined enough to save Jeanne that she would physically enter Inferno in order to save her friends soul. Despite the relationship between Rodin and Bayonetta being stated to only be a professional one, Rodin does have a soft spot for Bayonetta, just as she does for him, seeing each other as comrades and friends.

Bayonetta has a strong distaste for enemies who talk for long periods of time. When enemies who, in general campy fashion, go into tangents and begin giving speeches before fights, she is shown to be very irritated. Rubbing her temples, groaning, rolling her eyes, and even pacing around if there is room to do so. If these speeches go on for far too long, she will interrupt them by ether giving off an insulting snarky retort, or out right assaulting them in order to get them to shut up.
