Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features.
Super Smash Bros. 4
The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.
Updates
Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Update 1.0.4 of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS adjusted game balance.
Characters
- Mewtwo (Spring 2015)
- Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza. Mewtwo will be a free download to players who register both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015, and available for purchase some time after that. Besides this information and a teaser model, no information (including attacks and alternate costumes) is known.
Stages
- Miiverse (Unknown)
- A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 sometime after release.
Modes
- amiibo support (February 9th 2015)
- The Wii U version of SSB4 supports amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th/10th.
- Tournament mode (Unknown)
- During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tournaments online, but that it would not be ready at launch.
Other
- The ability to share player-created content such as custom stages, replays, and screenshots will be added in a future update, as stated by the 50-Fact Extravaganza.
