Controversy
There were several points of contention during the Melee singles events. At the beginning of Shroomed vs. Mew2King, which was a Sheik ditto, both players agreed to not chaingrab one another as per Gentleman's rule. However, once Mew2King was down 2-1 in the set, he told Shroomed he wanted to start chaingrabbing again. While this was technically legal by the ruleset, it did result in some controversy about whether or not this was good sportsmanship.
During top 8, it was found that ChuDat vs. Leffen (which Chu won 3-2) was initially played with the UCF mod off. Both players agreed to replay the set[3][4][5], and it was replayed after Mang0 vs. Plup. Leffen ended up winning the replay 3-2. This led to disputes about whether the replay should have been allowed, as many top players have noted their disapproval of the decision when the UCF made such a marginal difference in the gameplay itself. In addition, many players noted the problem in allowing players to make tournament-changing decisions.
Trivia
- With Wizzrobe winning Smash 64 singles, this is the first American major that Yoshi has won.
- This is the first major to utilize the Universal Controller Fix (UCF) mod in tournament play.
